Cycling Bibs vs. shorts

Are there advantages of bibs over shorts or is it just personal preference?

bibs are much more comfy for long rides with no “seam” around the waist. Took me a while to convert, but now I much prefer bibs to shorts

Shorts are easier on nature breaks but that’s about it. Bibs keep the boys in check better. I’ve also found that bibs cut down saddle sores compared to shorts.

You’ll notice that all the ‘pros’ use bibs. I, too, was a later convert. I now use my old shorts for trainer rides, short ones. From the first ride it was much better. No pressure on the back or the waist, the boyz stay better, just way better on long rides in particular.

Bibs are sexy.

Plus you are ready to wrestle, as soon as you get off the bike.

quadathlon - swim, bike, wrestle, run!

Once you’ve had bibs, you’ll never go back.

converted to bibs in march. i will never go back!

Anybody race a tri in bibs? What did you think? I know DeSoto did some tri bibs, but I think they’ve discontinued them.

I’ll be the dissenting vote here. The hassle required for the simple act of urination is just not worth any comfort advantage. In long rides, I’m uncomfortable in lots of places, the least of which is my belt line. Another alternative is the Desoto 400 mile shorts, which have a drawstring instead of elastic waist - they’re pretty comfy.

Correction…the De Soto 400 Mile Short has a drawstring and an elastic waist both, but comfy nonetheless, huh?

Bibs vs shorts is really personal preference. I train in bibs all the time.

If the bibs are made properly, you can still them down far enough in front when nature calls. The De Soto 400 Mile Bib Short is made that way.

Give them a try. If you don’t think they are the best you have ever worn, you can return them for a complete refund.

PresbyOpie, with a name like that you have got to be an OD.

Thanks to all for the responses, I’m gonna give bibs a try.

Not to hijack the thread, Emilio, but what about sizing. I’m 5’9, currently 184lb, but about 20 lb heavy from forced inactivity. Would you suggest medium or large bibs?

Plus you are ready to wrestle, as soon as you get off the bike.

Now HERE’s a man who’s thinking ahead!

Bibs rock da planet

Bibs all the way. And I don’t get the part about problems peeing, just lift the front of your jersey, pull down in the front and pull out what you want. Unless of course you’re a girl, then I can understand.

I agree thats pretty easy to do…

Wish desoto would bring back those bib shorts that were basically the 5 pocket skin suit without the top part I bought one pair a while back to try them out liked them but then they were discontinued…

I wear bibs for one reason with regular cycling shorts
shorts always tend to roll down because my bellie is a bit larger these days than it used to and with bibs don’t have that problem they hold everything in place.

Granted I could solve that with lypo suction I guess.

Believe it or not, you are going to be a medium. These shorts are sized pretty realistically.

Me? Wrong? Surely you must be mistaken! haha

And, yes, they are comfy. (and they really do have less elastic feel than most cycling shorts)

“PresbyOpie, with a name like that you have got to be an OD.”

No, but I do have presbyopia being in the over 40 crowd. And I kinda have those Opie Taylor looks… Well, at least I used to.
