Why is it that cycle shorts go see through so quickly? Can’t they make them out of a material or construct them in such a way that they don’t go see through after 3-5 months use?
The pad is still relatively good, but the butt crack is showing.
Is it just so you’ll go back and buy a new pair of shorts sooner than you really need to?
Hmmm. In all seriousness, I think it is the weight of the fabric. I wonder if you could find some heavier lycra or stretch fabric shorts. Either that or a tighter “denier” or weave of fabric.
We need someone here who knows the techncalities of stretch fabrics…
Sublimation actually squashes the fabric and makes it much thinner. If you can, get non printed shorts, they’ll last a lot longer.
3-6 months seems very excessive. I’ve never gone thru shorts that fast. Heck, I’ve got a couple of pairs previously owned by pros that still have plenty of life in them.
I had this problem only with lycra tri shorts used in a pool. Switched to polyester and that solved the problem immediately. As to cycling shorts, I’ve had no problems at all with Pearl Izumi. Wash only in cold; hang dry. Last for years. No see through.
worst culprits have been printed shorts of a lightish blue colour…but the louis garneau ones are plain black…
worst ever culprits were pearl izumi tri shorts…discovered they were also going see through at the front…after only around 5-6 uses! might have been a bit small tho.
Why is it that cycle shorts go see through so quickly?
Two reasons:
Inexpensive, low quality and thin lycra to begin with
Too much washing & drying. Regarding the latter - they should never be put through the dryer.
I have Sugoi shorts that are 5+ years old and still going strong. Mind you, they were top-of-the line shorts made with the best quality materials. They are made out of a heavier stretch Technifine material that, is very comfortable, breathable and durable
Cycling shorts in my view are one of those things that you just don’t skimp on - get the absolute best that you can. You should also have 3 - 4 pair in circulation/rotation, so that you are not wearing one pair out.
Wash them on delicate cycle, minimal detergent. No dryer (duh). I have all levels of quality and they’ve never worn out. As above, you may be wearing a size too small, too.
