“Cooler” Aero helmet options for Kona

Hi
My partner is doing Kona again and has worn Rudy wing in the past and at this point will probably wear the wing dream
(Will test both helmets for heat once we are on the big island )

Both helmets seem to be “as fast” as the other for her but she prefer the dream for comfort, but I suspect the dream is a bit hotter
I also suspect that plenty including her (and pros) are over heating in Kona conditions with the new wave of aero helmets with little to no ventilation

So what are the options
Possibly thinking a aero road helmet like the vanquish?
Aero head non visor
Rudy wing but no visor (the dream no visor looks to be super un aero )
Any other suggestions?

She is hope h to win or at least podium and the bike leg is her strongest (usually fastest bike in the age ) so we are trying g to get everything we can out of her bike
Will probably ride around 5-40hr hopefully

Obviously this is a trade off as more ventilation (holes in helmet) the slower u go
But also getting cooked isn’t a great option also

I could post a pic of her with the helmets if that helps
Thanks

I used the s-works evade last October, and glad I did. It wasn’t just the ventilation benefit but also getting water in through the vents to aid cooling. It was my first Kona, the main challenge was keeping core temperature down on the bike so I’d advise not to risk anything that compromised that…i rode a similar time btw

I am in the Netherlands and we are doing some testing. I don’t have final trends done, but the Evade actually did ok. Sometimes faster than some helmets in the below pic

we had 2 riders bring their own Evade 3 in, one of them seen here with some of the helmets they were tested against

the evade was never the slowest of the helmets tried

Can’t reply for anything aero wise, but I have the new dream helmet. Very confortable, great visibility, however I tested it during a 220k ride where the max temp was 24°c, and I was already feeling hot in it. I would probably go for something like an evade if you only loose a few watt but ensure you finish in a good condition

I was at the test where @marcag refers to. I wanted to know if my Evade 3 road helmet was an option for hot race conditions and actually was my 2nd fastest helmet. I tested 7 different helmets (Evade 3, HJC addwatt, Rudy Wingdream, Rudy Wing, Ekoi Pure Aero, Giro Aerohead, MET drone). For me, of course very personal, only the Ekoi was faster than the Evade 3.

But even on the track and short runs the Evade feels light and very cool compared to all the others.

Anything Kask?

I’m not, ever, going to be a Kona contender, but I’d be thinking around testing core temperature in advance and finding out whether the “fast” TT helmet does have a major negative effect - that would for mine compromise both performance on the bike and most certainly on the run. If you can get a core sensor and play around, that would seem a good way of doing it.

If it is, then probably look at the fastest ventilated helmet you can get. The Evade 3 is suggested below, I’ve got the old Scott Cadence which I love - 38 degrees was fine in that. Hell, Sebi won (no, he came second in it…) Hawaii in it, so it’s not that bad!

@davidjanssen , thanks for the info
Do I have any pics of your position in the evade v aero helmet ?

Yes
That’s the plan @altayloraus

@Conza
Are u suggesting kask helmets ?

Kask purports aero gains with their new helmet the Nirvana. Haven’t yet looked to see if there are testing results.

So any love for the vanquish?
Or the ekoi aero road helmet?
Kask navana ?
POC procen air

Going by this article the evade is a no brainer

I suppose it would be good to know if she would loose 5 watts or 15 watts going from a Rudy wing (or wing dream) to a evade just to stay cooler
Or even more so not over heat in Kona (like she did last time in Kona in 2022 )
Looking at riding about 160 watts NP 5hr 45

Whilst not a ‘new’ helmet, the LG P-09 has never felt hot on me and I do suffer the heat more than most. It’s faster with the vent plug out, and whilst I’ve always worn with the visor, again, is faster with no visor and you’d get even more ventilation.

Past and even recent tests have shown that it may not be the absolute fastest, but on most people is pretty fast (please note I defer to many on this thread in terms of actual test data).

I’ve had mine a while now, and seriously tempted to buy another to have for when this one is past it’s best.

Avoid the Vanquish; it was designed for one head position and performs poorly otherwise (even Giro claims their current Eclipse all-around helmet is faster, and many cycling pros used the Aerohead sans visor for the classics).

As far as the watt difference between the Rudy and the Evade3, it’s probably in the range of 5W at that speed.

Thanks that’s Arwsome info

@Duncan74
Cheers
Yes she is keen on a visor
Do u have a pic of you in tt position with it on ?

Mmm
That LG p 09 looks good
I think Lionel wore that when he can second in Kona?

Any other feedback on this helmet compared to the new range of helmets ?

Also no idea where to buy one if I wanted to seeing its nearly 10 years old
Now
Thanks

Noting different bikes/ years, same ‘having the time of my life’ happy face. And yes, the seat is too high, etc etc

But, to confirm that is the same visor. In the front on I’ve got my Oakley Plasma prescription lenses on underneath.

Small (despite being 6’4" i’ve a pin head) is still available on the LG site. $149

Thanks, just ordered a used one (the Cadence Plus) after doing some more digging online. Ain’t ever going to Kona, but it’s definitely what I need for the summer.
