Coffee Shop Injured Reserve

Sphere popped a rib, TricentralPA2 injured their rotator cuff. DrTC is still recovering from surgery. BLeP was diagnosed with a rare disease and should be getting offered MAID any day now. Apparently I herniated a disc in my lower back and have been experiencing the joy of duel leg sciatica for most of the summer so far.

What’s wrong with you, and how did it happen?

Well I’ll start…
fell while hiking, was trying to be cool and climb up a rock formation. Coming down was a lot faster than going up and not in a good way. Almost passed out.

But, I finished the hike. :slightly_smiling_face:

Just starting to build again, so give me time, but almost certainly a calf. Can’t say which side yet.

How much time you got?

I got all day brother, lay it on me!

I am having a hernia fixed later this month. It stems from an appendectomy in 2014. It hasn’t bothered me one bit till about thirty days ago I leaned over the sink to shave above my lip. When I stood back up, I went from zero pain to not being able to stand up. Hasn’t been a great month

Oh man, that sucks. I had my hernia journey in 2021 and it wasn’t a fun one. Apparently I have one on the other side as well, but I can’t feel it. It’s just a time bomb.

I hope you get in to surgery soon and the recovery is painless.

Sigh. In general level of increasing seriousness.

Two hammer toes.
Torn right knee meniscus discovered five years ago (seeing a doctor on Tuesday to see if surgery can get me back to running).
Numbness around hernia incision from three years ago.
Random blood clots (on Eliquis) that became bilateral PEs seven years ago, discovered by my bike’s power meter (I kid you not).
Developing arthritis in left fingers (I play the violin, so you can imagine how I feel about that!)
BPH that the doctor was convinced was prostate cancer, luckily well-controlled.
Discovered macular degeneration in one eye (my one good eye, but that’s another story!) that, a year later, has not progressed, so I should be good.
Peripheral idiopathic neuropathy that has progressed from my toes to the balls of my feet. No known cure, no known treatment other than daily B12 supplements. Put my mom in a wheelchair in her 70s. Uncomfortable at times, but not debilitating.

I’m 67. I do have almost 4,000miles on my bike this year (check out this solo ride from last week: 100km Tempo Ride | Strava), so it’s not all doom and gloom. On the plus side, my nearsightedness has disappeared and I’m now at 20/20 uncorrected. No more contacts!

Well after surgery early in the year for a detached retina, predictably cataracts in that eye have worsened rapidly. Scheduled for October surgery. Other than that nothing. Not bad for 65.

Last weekend I dropped out of a race due to a kidney stone. Worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Fucking hell!

How in the hell do you do a 100k and only get to 1400 feet of gain?? Holy hell - here in NH I simply cannot get below 50’ of gain per mile - it’s just impossible!

Seems as though you can still get right along, though - helluva nice ride, man!

I feel pretty well blessed, comparatively: dorked up my knee at the end of ski season… in '24. Haven’t run in a year. Gonna see what happens this week (on vaca)… hopefully it holds and feels Ok. We’ll see.

Other than that, things feel… Ok, for the most part: will break the 3k barrier this week on the bike (while not a lot for many here, that’s usually my yearly total. Striving for 5k this year…).

Jersey Shore, man. Farmland and horse farms to the west of me in Central Jersey.

This better for a Jersey ride? Lebanon 50ish Ride | Strava

I’ll be riding in Vermont next week with my riding group. Two of them did a Six Gap ride (~122miles, over all the hard climbs including Lincoln Gap). One of them is 70 years old.

That’s a damn impressive ride - mountain bike gain there! How is that in the same damn state??

I haven’t ridden any of the ‘gaps’ over in Vermont, at least not yet. I do ride most of the Notches here in NH a fair amount. I have found some crazy ass climbs on the gravel bike that far outpace anything paved in either state, though - just gotta figure out how to put it all together…

Have fun in the Vermont! I’m on vaca next week and will be in northern NH, but will be looking at doing a century through the northern part of Vermont, so long as I get the weather for it. Looks like it should be a good week… knock on wood…

Same. Don’t want to gloat in the injury thread. My time will come, but overall feeling good.

Turned 50 Wednesday. Up in the mountains for the week. Got up early and rode 50m mix of gravel/road with climbing. Then took family on a hike.

My birthday is in four days. Not too bad except for too much sitting around and not enough exercise lately.

The biggest current issue is that the scar on my shin where I had the skin cancer cut out in January started to kind of weep and ooze. Went back to see the dermatologist yesterday —>

Active mild focal impetigo at the superior aspect of the incision on the right shin. Close examination did not reveal a spitting suture which was likely the cause. At this point I would expect the subcutaneous absorbable sutures to have disintegrated. This may have put increased tension on the incision line.

Result? Keep putting the anabiotic ointment on it that he prescribed a couple of weeks ago when it first started. And keep an eye out to see that it doesn’t get infected.

Well in perfect health other than slightly high PSA this spring that lead to an MRI then biopsy and now scheduled surgery end of August for prostate cancer. 1700 miles of running in the past year and looks like I’ll be out of commission for a while.

Slight rotator cuff strain in left shoulder deadlifting several months ago that was lingering. Then about 3 months ago strained anterior delt on same side doing overhead press. Right were it inserts into the clavicle, thinking maybe I even avulsed the tendon. Anyway, left shoulder has now been fucked for 3 months. Finally going to PT to try to get it sorted out and it’s improving somewhat.

OTOH, I had chronic low back, SI joint pain for years, including sciatica a few times, and that is now pretty much gone after going to PT for it about a year ago.

Sigh.

Two bad crashes. Three surgeries on the left shoulder. Its OK all considered. Some soreness, reduced ROM. I can swim so how bad could it be? But just yesterday I fell asleep on that side while reading. Woke up just an hour later in pain. Shoulder was not happy to move certain ways. This is new. Hopefully I just pulled it funny while exercising.

Gastrointestinal bacterial imbalance. For 17 years ever since a dentist prescribed clindamycin antibiotic for a root canal. That taken orally will fuck you up. I have tried everything.

Finally persistent issues with the right leg. Started as tendonitis presenting itself as knee pain. Sorted with PT. Became glutes pain where tendon attaches. Sorted with PT. Became foot pain because of gait changes and inflexible ankle. Working on sorting that which lead to the same glutes problem from before. When you are dealing with issues like this the cartilage in the opposite knee tends to get worn and indeed feeling those symptoms slowly appear.

Persistent musculoskeletal problems near the left peck. Hurts when I bike or run especially if I push harder. OH NO ITS MY HEART every time it flares up. Is not the heart. This abruptly started one day in 2012 and is been with me on and off ever since. Got worse lately. Drs can’t find anything. Going to the Dr again just in case to rule our heart problems. See what a pain in the butt this is?
