Cheating at IMFL

This is not the usual cheating you see going on, drafting, this is actually transfering the timing chip and race belt to another individual on the course! After I swam a 1:04 and biked a 5:16 and 2 miles into the run I pass a large, 250 plus, guy jogging away at an accelerade heart rate with feathered back, blow dried hair with a timing chip and race number on his race belt. I’m no speedster, but it was apparent that this guy could not have biked 112 nor swam and had time to wash and blow dry his hair prior to the run. No helmet hair here, nor sweat.

This is just one of the obvious ones, I’m sure there are others doing this relay with the timing chip and race belt on the IM courses and not getting caught. It make me wonder about all the other ones out there. I’ve seen this quite often in marathons, particularly the Chicago Marathon, the vast crowds and participants make this easier for these cheaters.

Has anyone witnessed any of these goings on?

If that really happened, it be pretty easy to peruse the race photos when they are available and get some proof.

Maybe he was in Friday’s Clydesdale wave?

I’m not sure I see what the point of this would be? Hey you swim, I’ll bike and then the big guy gets the glory? Or am I missing something?

How would I be able to prove it by the race photos? This guy I saw could not have made it 26.2 miles, at his pace of 8:30 per mile he would only last another half mile. And then maybe hand it off to another. Plus, I heard there was at least 2 guys that were large, 250 plus, that finished in under 10 hours, this could be ligit, how would we prove it by a photo?

If you can find a pic of him, get the number, then get the rest of the pics of that number… Different guy with same number - WTF?

Steve

I am in no way questioning what happened here. You were there I wasn’t.

But a couple questions jump out:

  1. If you were capable of swimming faster than 1:04 and biking faster than 5:16 (ie. you did that and had to pass this person), why would you then hand your chip to someone else vs. running yourself. What would be the motivation

  2. If you were to decide to do #1 (ie. you are obviously willing to blatantly cheat) above why would you hand your chip to a 250+ guy vs. someone who could actually run. As you said you passed this guy by mile 2 so he must not have been doing his “teammates” much good to reach the goal motivated by #1.

Great race on your part btw.

They’d have to have all the photos for that given race number and side by side compare them.

Give some people a little credit though. I’ve seen big guys run sub 3:30 times in a mary.

Not saying that anything like that couldn’t happen, but just question the motivation TO do it …

I did notice in the results that someone with a very high finish was dq’ed. His bike time was extremely fast. My guess is he may have accidentally cut part of the bike course.

Great race on your part btw. I have no clue why they would hand off to this larger guy unless he was handing it off to someone else down the road. Plus, how he would be ahead of me and have time to dry and style his hair. I’m no speedster, but come on.

Was the racer in question named Adrian Zmed by any chance?

as I said terrry I am not questioning you just looking for a “logical” explanation. The DQ above post may explain it; check the results. The DQ guy swam 1:04 and rode 4:36 (can you say Bjorn) so he would have been slightly ahead of you. He did run 3:38 though so it may not be your (large) guy

My question was more “what were they thinking/why would you do something like that” vs. questioning what you saw.

Again nice results by you (solo)

I did not get a chance to look at his race number, it was on the front of him.

Logically, the only explaination I can come up with is that someone wanted a strong finish time to brag at the office and the only way to get it was to have others help out. Or maybe, this guy I saw registered for the race but only wanted to do the run portion.

Assuming the “fatty” could have finished the whole marathon, I could easily see why some idiot would do that. He pays a fast guy to set him up and then he jogs in for the glory of a much much faster time than he could ever do himself.

Looks like you beat me to it.

Wow. Maybe I’m just looking for a “logical” explanation where “logic” may not apply. You gotta admit someone who would do that has got some real issues though. I’m guessing small penis

Innocent until proven guilty. You never know he might have done the IM THere are some overweight people who do finish IMs just under the cut off. You should prove it before accusing.

I’m not saying that a larger person cannot finish an ironman. But can he do a faster than a 1:04 and 5:16 bike and not break a sweat and have time to dry and style his hair? I would say sure if he was in better shape, but highly unlikely in his physical condition, 250 lbs plus and about 5’11 height, dark brown wavy hair, wearing a white tank top.

I saw a couple of “fattys” doing really well at the race. One got out of the water early and I saw him later go out on the run from t2 where I was watching everyone. Don’t remember their times, though. You need some proof in your pudding.

Did he knock you out of a Kona slot?
