You guys make me laugh, amuse me silly. I love it when you 140 pound dripping wet dudes cast apersions at us big guys. My friend, who is 6’0", 250 did 10:53 Florida 2004 which is not even his fastest Ironman (he has done 9). He did 1:24 at 2006 Mt. Washington (NH) climb. I did it too. All you skinny dudes with your gluten free non-fat diets were smiling at him and his gut in his bike jersey at the start. At the top of the mountain the smiles were reaplced with awe, like, e.g. “Wow, you beat my skinny ass”.
It is true, weight makes a difference, however, some are built to go fast regardless of weight, we call these guys anomolies. Not cheaters.
I have done five Ironman races and it is usually the skinny dudes on P3 carbons who are drafting (intentionally). The same dudes endlessly debating whether having their Profile Aero Drink straw at 45 degrees vs. 90 degrees will shave off time. Hilarious.
I never worry about cheaters for one reason, why does it matter? Did you quailify for Hawaii at IMFL 2006 so even if it did matter ethically then you can go and sue the guy for cheating (LOL). Have you ever qualified for Hawaii?
Come on dude, worry about why your swim was not sub one hour and you did not break 5 hours on the bike. Maybe because you spent so much energy worrying about what others were/were not doing.
Your empirical evidence is both unimpressive and unpersuasive, on its face, of concluding that some “fat” guy cheated who maybe just smoked your skinny ass in the first two legs of the race. That, I can understand, might be very humiliating to you and hard to reconcile.
Stop harshing the mellow of big boned racers, dude.
I saw a couple of “fattys” doing really well at the race. One got out of the water early and I saw him later go out on the run from t2 where I was watching everyone. Don’t remember their times, though. You need some proof in your pudding.
Did he knock you out of a Kona slot?
UMMM… I think you need to re-read the thread. I was responding to some others. And was probably the most skeptical of all.
Knocking ME out of a Kona slot… NOW THAT"S FUNNY!!!
And for the record I didn’t use the term “fatty” (mostly because I resemble that remark
Apparently, you did not read my post. I did not say larger triathletes cannot finish well OR that they cannot beat me, they do. Just that this guy had time to dry and style his hair…TOTALLY DRY, AND Feathered in an 80’s style cut, not much sweat either. How do you expain that??
Plus, don’t cut me down because of your lackings. I too am 6’3 and 175 lbs. so I am no fatty nor a light weight.
The DQ above post may explain it; check the results. The DQ guy swam 1:04 and rode 4:36 (can you say Bjorn) so he would have been slightly ahead of you…
I tracked down the DQ guy and even found his pix from IMFL 2004. (I won’t post here out of respect for him – track him down yourself if your interested.)
Anyway, he doesn’t seem to be your cheater as he would have been about 40 minutes in front of you coming out of T2.
I did read your post, several times to amuse myself since my work-day is going slow. I just think going from analyzing his hairstyle (which is creepy enough to me anyway) to calling (or imparting that he cheated) is a logical leap for which I will not embark. Simply said, I think it is ludicris. Maybe he dried off with a towel (as many did). Maybe, he does not sweat alot? It was cool down there. I too competed and finished IMFL 2006. And saw larger guys going fast and skinny guys going slow. What does it mean? nothing. Like Bobby Knight once said, perfume smells good but you don’t drink it. My point, stop worrying about why some “fat” dude smoked you in the swim and run and figure out why you did not break an hour on the swim or 5 hours on the bike. That’s the true question. I NEVER claimed I did/did not go fast/slow, or could/could not. Only that your post seemed to imply “fat” guys can’t race fast and smoke the skinny guy’s.
I don’t know that dry hair counts as a smoking gun. My hair was dry coming off the bike, I did the whole thing.
Your absolutely right. That’s why I did not confront him on the course nor notify anyone. I have no solid proof. However, at 5’11 and 250 lbs plus with dry styled hair, breathing heavy as if he is going to fast and in the top 9% of the IM field… Just looks out of place.
My in-laws were watching and they thought a racer or two did the swim and then went to their rooms and came back for the run or something to that effect. I don’t remember what made them think that though. Maybe he just wanted to run and dq’d himself later. I don’t know. Raace pics are really the only proof.

See, if you would have read my post you would know that this person in question I PASSED on the run. Plus, if you would have read my post I asked question at the end, if anyone know of such cheating going on? Not that I want to get in a verbal arguement with you.
BTW the only thing I’m “worried” about is if I beat you?
I have to laugh at your post…it reminds of an old friend like yours who taught me a very humbling lesson about judging a book by its cover. Many years ago when I was a young pup coming out of college, I decided to head out for a lunch time run when a co-worker asked if he could join me. I was a cocky, 22 year old, ex-college rower, in top shape. This guy was mid-30s (which seemed really old back then) and had this huge beer gut. I chuckled to myself, thinking “Sure thing buddy, your welcome to try to keep up”. Well, it was about 110 outside, and this guy throws about half a can of Copenhagen into his lip, then proceeds to run me into the ground!!! The guy was just a freak. These days, I’m never surprised by the shape and size of some of the folks that put up great times at races.
I have friends at the event, and told me that 2 persons that they know, that they were minutes behind them finishing the water, one cheater was passed by one of my friends at the km 130 and the other cheater was not catch in the bike by the 2nd of my friends, my friends ride way more faster than the 2 cheaters, they told me " we never saw them passing ourselves in the bike ", and, thinking, our explanation is that this 2 persons cheated on the bike course, but, how they did that?? we think that it was in the part of the road when you go back and forth, we think that this 2 persons made some meters, stopped, like to repair a flat, and then, the go the opposite way, doing a lot less km that they must do. I think that organization has to have a chip carpet on the turnaround, so this type of cheaters can get caught, and, suspend them for life for entering another ironman race.

My dad swears he saw one person riding in an area that was not part of the bike course that had a race # on, and when he looked at a map, he figured they were cheating. He asked me what was done on the bike course to prevent someone from cutting the course. My answer was nadda…
I was actually hoping there were more timing mats out on the bike course so my family and friends could track me. I figured there would be, but the night before when I was showing my parents the website to track me, I realized there weren’t going to be any out there. Someone else could have seen this and cut the course.
