Roth selectively pays a handsome appearance fee and prize money is good as well
Is she experiencing the same that Anne Haug had - She is also 39, raced a lot, and you hold up, you are competitive, but 1-2, 3 injuries at a later age, you are still competitive, but it’s hard to recover, and it just keeps getting worse until you call it quits?
Wow, she is a lot older than i thought! 39! I assume Kona this year is practically her last as she hits 40 next year. Or at least it will be hard to compete against the rest for the win (she is still top top). Same as Lange basically
The ‘recover’ thing is undisputed.
Typically Philipp races a 70.3 shortly before Hamburg and then goes to Roth a month later. This year she gave herself a 3 week gap between Aix and Hamburg: better than the week between Kraichgau and Hamburg in 2025. I am surprised she and Seipp chose to attempt the Hamburg - 4 weeks - Roth double again. I can see the immense attraction of a home (N Germany) race but need to nod to the ‘recover’ need. It is of course perfectly reasonable to blame her illness in April plus the wish to race a 70.3 before Hamburg for ‘racing too early’. But leaving your first race until May is a choice.
Ack hindsight, in part. Compare and contrast the race schedule choices of others who aren’t chasing IM Pro Series points. Knibb - Texas and done (Tizzy, SC, Nice). LCB - soft Lanza post rehab and done (and no indication of any racing maybe T100 Vancouver?, before Nice). Derron - T100 then late Thun. Sodaro - rehab, late IMLP. Christensen - three IMs plus 4 halfs before Kona.
Off topic! I said upthread ‘last chance to win Kona’. Philipp showed she is still right up there. Her Hamburg bike was uncharacteristically poor, but boom! an excellent 2:42 run taking 6 minutes out of Loevseth. A better bike than at Hamburg last month or Kona last year and she is right up there.
Even with that, though, winning Kona will be a hard ask. LCB and Knibb will be away overbiking in front again: that gap needs to be less than 10 minutes. Philipp will not swim faster than Matthews, won’t bike faster than her so at best will start the run with her. I expect Derron to be along for the ride in dogged Sutto style. Loevseth’s tactics will be same as Hamburg: drop that chasing pack “I just looked behind and there was noone there” and run down the swim-bikers.

Think that pod was recorded post Lanza/late May. PTN reported in very early June that the PTO had finally paid all the outstanding end-of-year T100 Standings bonuses.
As the 70.3WC she has a pass to race Nice, without validation. That opens a window in her race schedule for one middle distance race and you’d assume she’d want to race one pre Nice, Given the $50k on offer ftw at T100 Vancouver, compared to peanuts elsewhere, I’d have thought avarice would prevail.

Think LCB has decent sponsorships so I don’t think prize money is a deciding factor as to where she races. She picked an IM to validate that has the lowest price purse on the entire tour but I suspect her bonus makes up the difference.
With the leaked news of Frankfurt being cut short to 125 km and 21.1 km, what are we looking at in terms of possible additions to the Roth start list?

Arnaud Guilloux just (a few hours ago) shared that he was racing in Roth. Maybe we’ll see a few others jump in too!

Those that need a KQ (there’s a lot of top 30 names) will stay. Those who need the IM Pro Series points will stay. Guilloux is KQ (IM Brazil) and DNF’d Texas so is out of it for the IM Pro Series - hop it to Roth to race a week later in sensible high 20s temperature.

Now that bike/run is only slightly longer than a 70.3, you might find guys thinking they could do the double - the same way that there are people from Elsinore on the start list.
