well but athletes are supposed to pass as soon they are in the zone
and even if its only 0.1 seconds in the zone you have to pass according to the rules. so the yo yo ing is actually significant as not following the rule saves a lot of energy and while we dont need to be yo yo nazis your 1.5 second only being a minute is not quite correct . ie atheltes that yo yo a lot ,need to leave a bigger gap and be more vigilant.
in the worst case yo-yoing can be the difference to keep riding at 260 watts or having to pass 12 people at 380 ish watts. so you massively penalise the athelte that rides fair , the way you look at it … its "only " a minute.
lets just say that 1 min minute is 45 times 1.5 sec in the drafting zone riding 25 seconds at 260 vs 380 watts would be about 15 min riding at significantly lower watts ,I dont think you would say saving 15 min riding at significantly lower watt does not matter, if you do I buy a hookless rim tomorrow lol
Was it Vinces first LC race? He has a lot to learn.
Having been to Roth multiple times it isn’t a normal course where you can avoid people. If you come out of T1 in a pack there is a lot of time on the first 10km downhill into town where there just isn’t enough room for a group.
If you get to either of the 2 big climbs you can’t pass, especially up Solerberg.
Data has been removed for the first 500m after T1, the last 500m before T2, and 8 sections of the course. 5 aid stations, plus the 3 major climbs where crowds are dense: Solar Hill, Kränzleinsberg & Kalvarienberg.
I think they perfectly achieved that jan stratman spend a lot of time in a group yet rode clear.
while with a few atheltes we very clearly see they do not follow the rules as good as they could .
I guess if you want a table how many kalories and crossing lt1 or even lt2 every athelte saved with their behaviour than we could agree that would be a valuable bit to educate the atheltes and fans what it actually really means.
but again in terms of calorie consumption and burning matches not doing a pass when obliged saves a lot more than drafting an athelte for 1 min at 11 meter instead of 12 vs 1 yo yo
lets say 10 watts for 1 min
vs 80 watts for 25 seconds which will defo get you in an area where you burn a lot more carbs
I think what they clearly show is there is a lot of atheltes that ride very fair and there is athletes that have room for improvement
out of interest what would you suggest that is missing to make it more educational for atheltes and fans ?
You may remember that first PTO race: Challenge Miami.
That was his first, and he did have an unscheduled 5 minutes stop (as did Brownlee junior iirc). 20m draft zone and no RR.
His ‘no draft’ races this year have been at 20m, with RR.
It must be difficult for SC athletes, since your instinct developed over years is to draft, to control that. Schoeman did OK though.
me ? Given this is the first time, I would have published it anonymously, no athletes names. I would have listened to public debate, see how people are interpreting or misinterpreting the data. I would have perfected what is published. I would given the athletes and opportunity to ask questions and debate. I would have done this once, twice, three times, refine and then start publishing in the future. Maybe they did all this. Who knows ?
The fact that there is a receiver and transmitter that work in tandem, I doubt there are any errors beyond the actual combined size of the pucks-I’d guess 4-5inches/~15cm.
Are you quoting the very same KB who is known to ride a super tight 12m very regularly? Perhaps he protests a bit preemptively knowing he’s likely to show a good bit of “too close” time upon inspection.
I’d have guess if the athletes didn’t do that seemingly spur of the moment agreement in the pro race briefing to “release the data”, I think it would have been anonymous. But when you got the athletes behind it, they are basically saying put names on it, and so if they are giving their blessing, I think you gain credibility as the data is the data.
dont quote me on this but I seem to rember blacked out data has been made available in the past
I agree it would have been better to discuss this as pro triathlon organisation but there is no pro triathlon organisation anymore …
that is the reality
from what I see so far all is civilised and realy the rules are simple there is nothing posted that is not clear and at the same time there is never a perfect way to make it 100 percent clear
and I think we can agree Vincent would have no reason to complain had he gotten a penalty the only question really is why did he not get one at the same time its not bad either at the same time if I was. Fred funk I would be pissed off being beaten by him.
so I guess you are worried about the atheltes that did not follow the rules perfectly as they maybe should, iam a bit more worried about the people that should have placed a bit better given the rules.
and I think in the top 20 overall that was a fair enough race
now 20 plus mind drafting and 250 yo yos thats another story
Compared to the previous year, the data shows a positive trend: On average, the time spent by male professionals in the prohibited zone was 5% lower than in 2024, and for female professionals it was an impressive 11% lower. A clear sign that awareness of fair racing is developing and RaceRanger is already having a measurable impact.
Laura Philipp has pulled the plug on 2026 Roth. Pity. Illness, but still goes up to altitude for a long block after Hamburg.
Challenge Roth organisers must be (understatement) disappointed. Philipp went so deep in Hamburg, a four week turn around (by design/choice) to Roth was always a risk.
Last chance for her to win Kona might be a factor.
Don’t think Luis is racing, given he’s on the Frankfurt start list. Having said that, I’d dodge Frankfurt in high 30s (>100oF) for a marathon and switch to Roth a week later.
