Bonked , ate some grass, it worked

Ya i was doing a 15 mile time trial , then a 15 mile easy fartlek return…bonked about 8 miles out. Stopped a t a swamp area and pulled some long grass out exposing the tender white stems and chewed on that stuff for about five minutes…it worked .

triathlete vs wild

next race youre going to make a bike out of bamboo and a saddle from a living squirrel.

I’m not sure how that worked, since people can’t digest cellulose.

Why did you assume he is a person?

Touché…

Sorry, when I saw “grass” I though this thread was going to be about something else…

He didn’t digest the cellulose, he got a little bit of sugar out of the heart of the plant. Thats what plants do, they make sugar, and then filter it downwards to keep the roots alive. If you pull out the tender bits, the sugars are more concentrated and it is easier to chew, so you do ingest a slight amount or carbs that way.

Very cool

I haven’t heard anything so dumb in my life. What saved you was you stopped for 5 min and rested.

were you running in south america?

*Coca: Tropical shrub (Erythroxylum coca) of the family Erythroxylaceae. It is native to the eastern Andes Mountains but cultivated in Africa, northern South America, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. Its leaves are the source of cocaine and several other alkaloids. Coca thrives best in hot, damp environments, such as forest clearings; but the leaves most preferred are obtained in drier localities, on the sides of hills. *

Exactly,

…and lit a fatty

That’s why I always bring a J on a long run!

Pretty sure it’s fairly impossible to bonk on mile 23 of a 30 mile ride. Unless this was actually a run, and you haven’t eaten any carbs in the last week and did a nice 4 hour workout the day before without eating anything after, you didn’t bonk.

Mooooooooooo.

I bonked alright, been doing this dam sport for 15 years now, and I know if I got a flat tire too.
I ate probably 15 stems { you don’t actually ingest the fiber you just chew the sweet juices out and spit out the cud]. Yes slowing the rate of burn by stopping did help …but I definetly could feel a boost from the sugar in the grass…A health chef for a livin has tuned me into all this malarky. EVrything you eat has a direct impact on how you feel.A lttle side note ; I ate a little alfalfa too…mistake.

So you’re smart enough to know what types of wild plants to eat but not smart enough to know how many calories to take in on hard ride?

How are you distinquishing this boost feeling is from carbs rather than from the possible placebo affect? It seems unlikely that these few stems would boost your blood sugar level enough that quickly to make a significant difference.
