Blow out on tubeless evne rim at tour

So our coverage in Oz didn’t pick it up , but it was very obvious that the crash near the end was from a uae bike rear rim blowing out ,
You could hear the bang just before the crash and also see the sealant all over the roads and rim
The bike had completely lost its rear tyre

I’m yet to be convinced of the so called benefit of tubeless and stuff like this doesn’t help the cause
Lucky more weren’t injured more badly
I belive the pog and the team are on new prototype enve rims
Pretty sure they don’t want this happening to the great pogi so maybe they will go back to the rims from last year

So all you tubeless lover’s out there, try and explain wtf is going on here
It’s not good

This looks like one of the posts from a few years ago arguing that brake discs were cutting riders in races… Didn’t happen.

Until we have the facts of what happened, there really is nothing to discuss.

Its relatively unlikely this is a blowoff. Much more likely to be a catastrophic flat, which means a tubed tire would have had the exact same result.

Can’t recall any credible stories of tubeless, or even hookless, tires actually blowing off wheels in recent memory. Its always been a rim failure, which again means a tubed tire would have the same result

  1. The wheels UAE are on are not prototype. It appeared to be the new 4.5 pro which includes a “micro hook” (it’s not hookless). This wheel was announced last week.
  2. Putting aside hooked vs hookless, and just focusing on tubeless vs tubed, there likely wouldn’t have been any difference in the result if they were running tubes. Tubes wouldn’t have saved anything.
  3. No one is forcing you to run tubeless. If you are more comfortable running tubes, then do that. Tubeless does allow you run lower pressure (especially if you running 28+ mm tires) without the risk of pinch flats. It can also save you from minor flats or small cuts that a tubed setup could be vulnerable to (eg; nail, rock, glass, etc).

Ha! Josh just released this

10min of pros and cons

At 9min pretty damning

Oh, and his analogy to why sneaker prices don’t come down is gold :rofl:

Damn, I just got a set of hookless :rofl::rofl:

Man, I hate to rain on a good conspiracy theory but the Bahrain Victorious rider went down first and Almeida went over the top of him.

What did you buy?

I bought a Ventum that came with a set of zipps

Ha, great choice. I did a fondo event 2 years ago that was using Ventum bikes for their loaners. I loved the wide tubeless ride so much that I bought one when I got home. Incredible value and my introduction to both disc brakes annd tubeless. I upgraded to the Enve 3.4 wheels, because wider. I just put 30 mm Vitoria Corsa Pro tires on it, and the ride is glorious.

Since the enve “blowout” is apparently fake news I don’t mind deviating from the topic
Received the bike this week. Aero testing against a E119 next weekend
In parrallel Conti TT 28 vs 30 vs Corsa Pro speed 28 vs 30 vs Pirelli 30 (I only have 30s). Presure testing from 4.5 to 6 bar. I know I know, not allowed to do 6 bar, but it’s OK, I am not the test pilot

New Archetype tire on the way but will probably arrive too late

I put on a set of Archetype tires for my Eddy TT, and had my first flat in 2 years with only about 30 miles on the tires. Something cut the rear badly enough that it wouldn’t seal.
My Ventum is coming the end of the week, and I am wondering what tires to replace the stock Schwalbes with. I’m thinking TT TRs in 28mm, but I’ll ber interested see what your experience is.

Locking this one down as, well, that’s just not what happened.

Oh, and split Marc’s stuff into the “what I’m testing lately” thread.
