100/100 Airing of the Grievances Thread - 2024 Edition

Of my running career. Its easier to jog more miles than run. You need to ask yourself are you just jogging or actually running - you know like a dog is chasing you. This actual pace different for individuals… but if just jogging the requirements should be higher

Happy 100/100 Eve to all who celebrate!!!

Are we going to have two calendars, the way Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox have two different Easters?

My Screaming Tortise AC bib reveal…

I thought I’d do two this year, one for Fall, and one more Wintery; but both semi-gloomy

I know there are places where Winter days can be bright and sunny and crisp - “Bluebird Days” I think the Skiers call them, if The Weather Channel is to be believed

I don’t know if I’d be comfortable going out for a run on mid-Winter day like that, I tend to embrace my grumpiness at this time of year, and actually use it as a motivation - a fuel if you will

YMMV

I’m guessing you’re aligning to a December start-date? Posting “something big” on the eve of a November 15 date, might not generate great response

Maybe Slowtwitch should have two Running Streak clubs as well.
A 100/100 one that starts on November 15th and you have to run for 30 minutes (and 1 foot has to be off the ground at all times, and no double days unless 2 hours separated the workouts, and all those oldey rules)

And a 70/70 one that starts on December 15th and u just self grade.

I sort of started on the 16th (didn’t run 15th) with a weird race: 1mi loop, you have 15mins to complete and can’t set off for the 2nd lap until time elapses. 14mins for the 2nd loop, then 13, 12, 11, 10…then by 30sec increments (9:30, 9, 8:30) down to 7mins, then 15sec increments all the way down to 4:45.

Noone actually made the last lap, but Rob Brouillette won the thing running just shy of 5mins for his 20th mile - the only one to go out for that one as the last other guy timed out on the 5:15 lap. Really cool to watch the fast guys slay!

Probably won’t push into any double runs this week as I’m trying to shake a nasty cold, but I’ll be running - fortunately my stupid MCL (popped when a guy fell on top of me playing hockey a few weeks ago) doesn’t mind it too much

Wow. That’s crazy. Backyard ultra on decreasing rest.

I had an idea for an Elimination Race once, and I think I posted it in the Screaming Tortise FB page

Loops start on the hour. Last person to finish each loop is eliminated. Continues until it’s one-on-one. Distance per loop to be determined by number of entrants. Minimum duration? TBD by number of entrants and cruelty of RD LOL

When I first started the Screaming Tortise Black Friday 20K Solo Relays in 2009 (4 x 5K, 6 hours between legs) people though THAT was nuts

“Why not just run 12 miles?”
“THAT is not a challenge. you just book an Hour or two where you’ll be ‘unavailable.’ Try going out for a run at 6AM, Noon, 6PM, and Midnight, on the same day. The day after Thanksgiving. Family stuff. Putting up Xmas decorations. Shit like that. To quote Dr. Ian Malcolm ‘Life … uh … finds a way’”

to be honest - I’ve only completed it “according to Hoyle” twice over 15 years

I got busy with life and did not check the running sub forum, but have been trying to run 5-10 times per week (often it is 15 min jog after swimming at lunch and 15 min after riding trainer at night.

In any case @E-Dub and @rrheisler when do you guys want to get this show rolling (what’s the target date)?

Also one more thought. I find myself not really going to the sub forums. If this challenge is buried in a sub forum we will get less engagement for sure. I think it would be better if we just put it in the main forum and really it’s about triathlon lifestyle. It was not started by runners, it was started by triathletes to help lay a base around swim and bike training in offseason because small runs can frequently be integrated into a swim focuses day or a bike focused day versus NOTHING AT ALL.

Literally all be one or two of my runs per week are attached to a swim or bike for time savings, and its enough to do Olympic or even half IM (not well, but I literally don’t train for running as standalone).

So let’s announce this challenge in the main forum!!!

No. Let The Runners here be The Runners here. This is a MULTI-Sport forum, yes; but that doesn’t mean that you have to do ALL of them to be a member or participate

I don’t think @Dr_Tigerchik does anything but swim, yet she’s highly regarded here

I’m actually surprised that LetsRun or Runners World haven’t tried to gobble up 100/100 format for their own (with all associated marketing, swag, and whatever ELSE they could sell) and completely disavow wherever it came from

If you aren’t looking at this category it’s because your aren’t looking here:

https://forum.slowtwitch.com/latest

This shows you are the latest posts in all categories that you haven’t muted. It’s effectively the same as the old forum with everything all in one. In fact, it’s a little better in that you can see some categories that you previously had to go to (classifieds, etc) explicitly.

If you aren’t using that link you are just being stubborn.

@RandMart you flatter me. I actually did triathlons and rode/cycled a bit until the catastrophic injuries hit over the past 18 months or so… years of training mistakes (little strength training being one of them).

I have the swim creds here due to being an ok triathlon swimmer but more a knack for remembering on the first of the month to start a swim thread

anyway, flattered; thank you
don’t overtrain, peeps!

Did an early turkey trot, yesterday… A work charity run for families in need during the holidays. They raised $13k.

Anyway, I managed a half-respectable 23:42. I’m happy with that 8 weeks after returning to something that resembles training.

I think everyone else acknowledges that it’s not a particularly smart way to train for pure running, as it discourages days off that most runners should take and doesn’t really reward structured training. The 2mi/20min requirement is likely too soft for LR.

I’ve never been known for my good judgement, though.

I see a new challenge. Most perfectly followed, structured training plan. Come up with a points system for compliance. 10 points per day for perfect compliance. -1 point per 10% non-compliance. -10 points for running on a day off.

So, if you were scheduled for 10 miles (for easy math), and you either underran by doing 9 or overran by doing 11, that’s minus 1 point? 8 or 12 would be minus 2 points, etc?

So, how would a person ever get back on track? Or could they never?

I think there should be a way to make birdie to erase the bogies, if I may?

YMMV

I hate golf!

Compliance is compliance. You can’t “make up” a non-compliance. Most of the time with an actual training plan, that type of “makeup mentality” is detrimental to the plan. That said, I could see one “make-up” per week. I’d cap it at 1 pts / 10% to discourage big swings like in your example.

I don’t think a 20% swing between two runs of equal duration is “compliant”.

Eg:
5, 10, 5, 10, 5, 15
(barryP style) is not the same as:
5, 8, 5, 12, 5, 15

Speaking of Turkey Trots …

I will not be participating, however, except as a contributor

Or cut back to 50/50 just to see how things shake out?

I am registered on EricJensen’s platform so entered that Challenge but have not been tracking what I am doing, but looks like I have 15 runs Nov 15-Dec (I think I missed three days). Been trying to jack up mileage a bit before 70.3 Worlds.
