100/100 Airing of the Grievances Thread - 2024 Edition

Gonna try to do this one this year. As always my grievances are just with myself, because life. But I gotta do something different.

Also I’ve been off the site for a long time, loving the new format, but is there a way to post in a forum thread or do we still just reply?

I am anxiously looking forward to hearing how this will be documented. I am still diligently logging all of my miles on the training log formerly affiliated with ST. How will we be tracking run miles/events for this challenge?

I’ll again be going rogue, doing my own “non sanctioned” 100/100, and not posting anywhere

But, I still intend to shit-talk, when & where appropriate

I’m down for this.

Let’s START! How do we sign up? I vote for same as last year => 20 min or more

I dunno - the 2-mile/20-minute minimum seems pretty soft to me; you hardly work up a good schvitz, and the endorphins are barely moving into the bloodstream. That’s why I always opt for 3/30, personally

But, you do you

I’m a multisport athlete so I have to get in 2 workouts a day, so that means run + bike/swim/ski. I also have full hip replacement and knee reconstruction. I can manage 20 minutes/day no matter what, even if I have to run in a foot of new snow along the road.

More than a few times, I’ve been talking to someone (usually about running) then I’d add that I also do cycling for MS, and used to swim fairly regularly

“So, you’re a triathlete then?”
“I wouldn’t say that,” I’ll answer, “I mean I was, and still might be. But I’d rather not confess to it. Being a Runner is bad enough”

Funny!

I love this challenge. I’ve never succeeded, but it always helps me run more consistently. It shows me that no matter how disciplined I think I am, I can make excuses to skip a day. So let’s try again.

With July and August off due to a back muscle spasm, I’m at 255 runs at 1418km so far this year, my best year since I got my garmin in 2018 and likely my best ever. Shooting for >50km per week through the end of the year and beyond, though a hectic work and leisure travel schedule, and a first child expected in mid February will likely derail any well made plans. So I hope to do doubles when I can, and bank some extra runs and mileage.

I’ll likely continue logging in garmin, Strava, runalyze and whatever spreadsheets and physical notebooks I currently have on hand, so what’s yet another log to add?

That, my friend IS succeeding; not necessarily doing 100 runs (or more) in 100 days

This has been my best year of running, consistency wise, ever.

My dog is in fantastic shape, too. He gets annoyed if he doesn’t get a short run in the mornings and evenings.

So, uh…what’s the plan?

The longer I do this thing…the more I’m coming around to the idea that 100 runs in 100 days is FAILING for most people (possibly to include myself). Whereas, success looks more like around between 70 and 85 or so?

Maintaining a consistent schedule of running 5 days out of 7 through The Winter (basically, taking Monday and Thursday or Friday off) has always worked well for me

Especially since Winter has a higher “do I REALLY want to do this?” Factor; when it’s cold, dark, and possibly wet

That’s when BadAssery comes into play - and I am totally up for that

Yes. I’m currently doing 5/7 taking one weekend day off (usually Sunday) and one weekday (usually Thursday), which seems to be working well. But, I’m easily prone to being goaded, guilted, enticed, challenged, or dared into 21/21 or whatever streak of 0 days off someone wants to have a go at.

Saturday

Rand: I ran 7 miles, when I was supposed to take the day off
Coach: What’dya do that for?
R: It was nice out
C: Oh, okay. Take tomorrow off then
R: I’ll try

Sunday

R: I ran 8 instead of 6, well, instead of taking the day off
C: You ran 7 yesterday, no?
R: Yep
C: Are you trying to hurt yourself? LOL
R: No, I don’t think so
C: How do you feel?
R: Pretty good
C: You’re going to take tomorrow off, right?
R: I’ll try
C: ~sigh~

Yesterday, while listening to Ten Junk Miles podcast, I heard mention of yet another threshold for “minimum run distance”

Now, the globally accepted minimum as adopted by the Streak Runners International, Inc., and United States Running Streak Association, Inc., as posted on runeveryday.com is to run one mile. Pretty easy to pick up, which is why the hacks at Runners World are so eager to jump on it and say "see! Even a novice can be a Run Streaker! Click here to find out how, and which shoes are best for YOU!!!

Slowtwitch 100/100, and its siblings, doubled that to 2 miles, or 20 minutes, adding a Time element, which is fine

Personally, I prefer the 3 miles/30 minutes threshold, that’s just me. When I get a chance to run during the day, I budget 10 minutes per mile ( which includes a cool-down walk around the block) to determine how far: 30 minutes? Go for a quick 5K; 45 minutes? We’ll do 4-4.5 miles

One of the guests on the podcast, however, said she uses a 4.1667 mile minimum

Does that number look oddly familiar?

Yep - one loop or “yard” from the Laz’s Backyard Ultra format. In this specific case, however, she called it “Dot” from TJMs “Last Dot Standing” event

https://www.tenjunkmilesracing.com/lastdotstanding

She called it “A Dot A Day”

Does C = R?

No, that’s not a transcript of me talking to myself, as much as it looks like; I DID have a real Coach at one time (actually, a friend who tried to coach me, pro bono)

Worked out pretty well, actually, as I beat my HM goal that year by 5 minutes

It was not sustainable, however, for a couple of reasons; my goofy knuckleheadedness being foremost
