IM70.3 Taupo 2020 World Champs Qualifiers
Quote | Reply
Thought I'd share this from Sunshine Coast 70.3, for those with aspirations of 70.3 Qualification for here in Taupo. Maybe add to it as the season goes, would make an interesting reflection, you would expect slots to be at a 'premium' in Australasia, be interested if anybody has similar info for Euro / Americas / Asian events:

Men
75-79 men: one spot. There was one starter so a spot was allocated but he didn’t finish so the spot went to the 45-49 year old men
70-74 men: one spot taken by winner
65-69 men: one spot taken by winner
60-64 men: two spots taken by winner and runner up
55-59 men: 3 spots. One went to roll down so fourth got a spot
50-54 men: 6 spots. Three roll downs then lotto. Ninth got a spot
45-49 men: 9 spots (including the one from the old geezers) Two roll downs so 11th got a spot
40-44 men: 9 spots. All taken on first draw
35-39 men: 10 spots. Went to lotto. 15th got a spot
30-34 men: 7 spots. Two roll downs so 9th got a spot
25-29 men: 5 spots. Three rolldowns. 8th got a spot
18-24 men: 3 spots. All taken on first draw

Women
65-69 had a spot allocated for the one finisher who didn’t take it so it went to 25-29women.
60-64: one general and one wft. One roll down. Third got a spot.
55-59: one general and one wft. Went to winner and runner up
50-54: two general and two wft. Fourth got a spot
45-45: four general and four wft. Five roll downs. 13th got a spot
40-44: four general and four wft. 11th got a spot
35-39: five general and four wft. 12th got a spot
30-34: three general and three wft. 9th got a spot
25-29: four general and four wft. All taken on first draw.
18-24: one general and one wft. Went to winner and runner up.

I did 70.3 Weymouth UK last year, earlier qualifier for Nice, 40 slots and IIRC hardly rolled in any AG.

Expecting it to be very different for Taupo this year; I’m not racing but the wife is and hoping to snaffle one of the WFT slots.

In my experience 70.3 Worlds roll less than they used to. Expecting that trend to continue.

You don't think there'll be as much interest from North America? We're getting mixed messages down here, people say it's thanks giving so people don't wanna travel / it's thanks giving so people wanna travel. Will be interesting if someone can post similar results / uptake of spots.

Search for Canada 70.3 thread, I posted almost full deets of the roll down there. Just went to Santa Cruz rolldown and it definitely did not go as deep as I expected. One older female AG with 3 finishers rolled to F50-54 and amongst all AGs, only 1 or 2 went past 10th, both on the men's side. Even the 18-24 winners took their slots. Maybe Indian Wells will roll a bit deeper but based on the interest at Santa Cruz, I will bet deeper rolldown doesn't come until Oceanside.

Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on why Ironman doesn't just publish this rolldown slot allocation? I can't understand why they make it so secretive...

It's not good for business when there is no interest. Busselton 70.3 in May, anyone that wanted a Nice spot got one. They stopped reading out the names and just said if anyone wants one, come and get it. People that had finished 50th or whatever got a spot. Makes the whole qualifying thing a bit of a farce.

This happened at several US races when it was in CHOO. I saw people finishing 50-75th grabbing roll down spots in some of the men's more popular divisions. In the women's division they were just going on anyone who wanted a slot then time order.

Bottom line if you or anyone wants a slot just make sure you do at least two 70.3 races and go to the slot allocation gig.

I stayed for roll down through 35-39 at IMAC 70.3.

I can tell you that most age groups had minimal roll down. Almost nothing outside of the top 5.

M35-39 had 3 slots and it rolled down to 8th place, which was the deepest I saw. Lucky for me, I was 8th place.

Superfrog 9/15/2019

M70-74 passed to M30-34
M65-69 1st
M60-64 1
F60-64 1
F55-59 2nd
M55-59 2nd, 3rd
F50-54 2
M50-54 5,7,10
F45-49 1
M45-49 1,5,7
F40-44 1
M40-44 1,6,11,21,24
F35-39 1
M35-39 8,10,11,12
F30-34 2,3
M30-34 5,7,9,10,12
F25-29 1
M25-29 3,5,6,7
F20-24 1
M18-24 2,3

These results have not been audited. I tried to count, but I might be off by a place or two. This is the best you got.

PS. All for WFT, as you can see from the slot allocation there weren't enough women at this event.

Not speaking for Pete. WFT ends up being extra spots at races that do not sell out. An incentive for more registrations for poorly attended races from WTC. If it were legit WFT would have equal spots at all races. The championship race is separated by gender over two days, no reason to have only 54% of women (compared to Men) qualify when they have their own day to race. If they were on the same day I could understand the argument of participation level percentages, but...

70.3 WC had 1778 women and 3261 men on separate days.

Look at Superfrog above, 30 spots for Men, 10 for Women.

I'm not sure that one has to be mutually exclusive of the other. Encouraging female participation is good, goosing the roster at low-turnout races is also good. (As much as I despise Ironman buying out local races, I don't want to see them subsequently get cancelled either.) I don't think it's a case of magical synergy, but I don't see it as purely mercenary either. Calling it "slots for slow women" is a cheap jab, though.

But we digress :o)

WFT was also represented at AZ70.3, which sells out every year.

Speaking of which, anyone have the slot distribution and roll down? My AG was a lot faster this year and I'm trying to make myself feel better about my DNS due to injury if where I expected to finish didn't have a shot at qualifying. (That said, I know at least two AGs rolled to 14th and 16th on the women's side.) Thanks in advance.

1st place was already qualified. 2nd and 3rd took the slot. 4th place didn’t attend awards. I took the slot as 5th. Roll down to 7th.

Woman’s had better chance yesterday, Female 45-49 rolled down to past 20th place. I don’t remember the others but on the male side it was definitely tighter.

Waco:
M40-44 and M45-49 both had 4 slots and both went to 9th (I got the final M40-44 for 9th place).
No other male AG went anywhere near that far. Nearly all of them stayed top 5. Some went 1-2 or 1-2-3.

They did the 25 women for tri slots after the main slots. They went much deeper. They were generally calling for anyone who finished top 20 in their AG.

Some roll downs in the women's AG before the WFT spots. The only AG I can sort of remember is the M45-49 where there were 4 or 5 spots. 1st & 4th passed.
I took the slot at 2nd, 3rd & 5th took their slots. I know the guy in 7th got a roll down slot as well.

I hung around for most of the roll down at Los Cabos, I think only one AG went to 10 most staying on the podium. To be honest I was a bit surprised but I guess I shouldn't have, if you have the money to go to Los Cabos for a race you probably have the money to go to NZ for Worlds and its still early in the qualifying window. I'd expect most NA based races next year will have deep roll downs.

Don't you think it is the other way around? It is basically, off season for most part of the triathlon community in the US, with virtually no rolldowns on most races. Don't you think that, as the 2020's heats up it shouldn't become any easier to nag a spot? Also, i'm not sure about the money factor regarding racing in los cabos. I'm from Houston and travelling to Los Cabos wouldn't be much more expensive than taking my bike on a plane to race in California, for example.

I'm not sure I quite follow you???? Historically as you get closer to the race the roll down goes deeper and deeper regardless of the 70.3 WC location, logistics become more and more challenging. My point about traveling and Los Cabos is that nearly everyone at the race was there on "vacation" very few athletes there live there, I could be wrong but I generally feel people typically don't travel as far for the average 70.3 than they do for a 140.6

Any reason Xiamen was so much slower this year? 2018 35-39 4:18 was the last Kona slot and this year the top five went 4:34-4:40.

The largest reason that Xiamen was slower in 2019 was the change in the swim from point to point (with a current) to a triangle. Swim times were 5-8 ins slower depending on abilities.

I think the bike was faster even though conditions were windier... we didn't have the rain we had in 2018.

The run may have been slightly slower since it was dry and sunny so much warmer than in 2018.

I was there with some of my athletes and was surprised with the rolling in the mens 45-49.

The Hong Kong guy that got the last spot was pretty happy.

I can’t believe I’m the one who started this thread & I managed to fall asleep at roll down! It had been a long couple days sorry. I woke up in the car as the last 18-24 female took her slot 🤣

Love it! I don't suppose the lovely Ms Warriner was taking notes instead of getting her own slot...

Anyone else in here happen to know where roll-downs went at 70.3 Taupo?

I know M45 had 10 slots. 2 already had one from previous races, so rolled to 12th

Sorry didn't pay attention to other age groups, but they generally only rolled if someone already had a slot

I'm just back home from doing 2019 Taupo. Great venue, great race. If anyone has questions about the race or travel from USA for next year I'd be happy to try to answer. I will say that was my first international 70.3 and I'm not sure if it was due to the Kiwis but my take away was that everyone was super FAST! I'd love to race there again next year but only if I could be teleported there and back. The 30hr travel day is just too much for this old man.

Anyone have predictions for the remaining US qualifiers?

I'm doing Gulf Coast 70.3. I ended up fourth in my AG a few years ago (M25-29, now M30-34) after a less than desirable showing. I'm confident I can mix it up at the pointy end... but what are my chances of snagging a WC spot? If it doesn't happen for me at GC, I was gunna try at Lubbock, which is one of the last chances for Taupo.

FYI there is another thread here with quite a bit of info for trip planning from both us locals and others that have been over from elsewhere. As it happens I've done both, doing the IM in 2008 as a holiday from the UK and since emigrating here in 2010.

My guess is some decent roll downs if past years are any indication. I can remember being at an early June U.S. 70.3 for CHOO 70.3 Worlds and watching them roll down 20-30 spots even in some of the most competitive male age groups.
