Zygomatic arch fracture surgery/recovery

Has anyone had this surgery? If so what was your recovery like? When did you start riding again? Thank you for your help.

Just had it, though in my case, the answer may be a bit skewed on recovery… but I can ask what would be “normal” when I follow up with my surgeon in a few weeks…

Been there done that. I broke in three places, under the eye, upper outside corner of the eye, and down closer to the jaw.

I believe the arch is down by the jaw. Correct?

My procedure had incisions from my front center tooth almost the full way back to my molars and they went up the cheek that way, as well as an incision inside my lower eyelid, and finally one on the eyebrow. I would guess you will not need that one.

It is nice to hide the scars, but its not a quick road to recovery. The incision on the gumline took multiple weeks to fully heal, even after the stitches began to dissolve it was not fully grown back. There is a good amount of drainage, that is one of the worst tastes I have ever encountered. Eatting is limited to fairly liquid foods, and your jaw will be quite sore for a few weeks. I had to use a very high tech stack of tongue depressors with a rubber band to help shim/stretch my jaw muscles back out to normal.

For the first week you will probably be on heavy pain meds and spend most of the time sleeping. I had my surgery before Thanksgiving break in college, used that week to recover. If I remember correctly they said no physical activity for close to a month.

I still have some issues, some nerve damage that affects some feeling in my cheek area, an interesting symptom while swimming that you will sometimes get water up your nose and it will drain back into the nasal cavity, almost down to my gums. It is a very odd sensation, My gums get really cold when it happens.

Not trying to scare, just giving my experiences. I actually had a snowboarding accident a month ago and broke my right radius near the wrist and scaphoid, I think I hit right on the side where I had all the work done, did not have it checked out, because I do not know if I would want to go through the process again.

Rappster,

When did you have surgery? How are you feeling? I go in tomorrow.

It was the second surgery I had done, after the initial trauma work immediately after the accident, which was Tue Mar 23. Then I had the zygomaxillary repair done (with Synthes hardware put in) on Mon Mar. 29. There is still some pain and numbness/“nerviness” in my face, but remember I hate a lot of other damage. I iced my face continously for the first two days, which helped a LOT. Since then, I know ice it about 30-40min 3-4x per day, which feels really good. They went in an existing cut over my eye, an existing cut (I think) under my eye, and under my upper limit. The pain in the face is not too bad. Just feels kind of weird. But it’s gets more normal as the swelling goes down…

Good luck!
