Zipp Vuka Carbon extension with Shimano Di2 2-button bar end shifters

Hi guy,

I’m considering getting the Zipp Vuka (Carbon) extensions, but am unsure how or if their shape would work with a Shimano 2-buttom bar end shifter?

This is specific for the carbon(not aluminium) extensions as they have a more oval cross section at the grip end for a more ergo grip, and their end cap seems to be design for the single button shifters.

Was wondering if the 2-button shifters will fit? And if they would be a big mismatch to the oval shaped profile and cause discomfort when gripping.

Has anyone has had the above set up and gotten them to work?

Cheers

Yep - work well. The routing has a little hole for the di2 wire too which makes it completely internal…… as you know the di2 wire for the double buttons usually means your using bar tape for most extensions but these are one of the few that had a slot that perfectly matches. Buy them you won’t regret.

Thanks IamSpartacus! Good to know about the hole fore the wire.

How do u find the shape of the vuka grip? To they match with the more rectangular shape for the 2-button shifters? Do you have photos of your set up? TIA!

I found if your arms or reach is a bit short, these extensions don’t work. The extension gets larger as you get to the bend in them so you are limited in how far you can slide them into the clamp.

Thanks for tt heads up. Will check on the length of the shortest clampable part versus the extension reach I need.

Got these Vuka Carbon 110mm rise extensions installed on my bike and hit a few minor road bumps.

  1. The internal hollow space is tight and uneven from the carbon molding. BT-DN110 Di2 battery will not fit inside the extensions. I had to shift mine from inside my left extension, back to inside the seat post.

  2. Profile Design Aeroport for the EW-RS910 bar end Junction A nearly fits. Di2 wire has no space to loop back out between the Junction A body and the inner wall of the extension. Had to get out my dremel for a small hole under the extension to loop the wire back out.

  3. The shape fits the SW-R671 2-button shifters nicely like what IamSpartacus mentioned in the post above. But it has a dedicated hole for the wire to go through that is fixed below the main opening. So shifters can only be fit in one orientation with the 2-buttons either pointing to the side inwards facing one another, or outwards away from one another. My usual orientation with the 2-buttons facing skywards to be operated by my thumb is not possible.

  4. The forward most point(round section) of the extension where one can clamp on sits about 245mm from the tips of the extension. For cockpits like my Tririg Alpha One where the extension clamps are in front(not under) the elbow pads, there is a limit on how near you can bring the extension reach towards the saddle as mentioned by mattr.

Due to the fixed button orientation in Pt 3 and the limit to the min extension reach I can get in Pt 4, I ended up ditching the 2-button SW-R671 shifters for the single button SW-R9160 shifter.

I believe these are the shifters that were on my wife’s TT bike and I’ve pirated for the short term. If they are the same as what I have you and I do that bolt and run the etube wire through the center of the 5mm compression sleeve bolt. Set the position you like, get it to mfg’s suggested torque, push the wire through and reassemble the shifter.

Yes, thats exactly how I run the wire on my two button di2 shifters as well. Should help with the original poster’s di2 wire alignment issues with the zipp carbon extensions.

Ooo…ok. that would work. Just shape of the shifters will no longer match nicely with the oval of the extension. Oh well, can’t have the best of both worlds.

Thanks!
