I recently hit my Zipp Disc wheel and created a small (1 inch) gash in the wheel wall. I’m looking to have it fixed but aren’t sure how to proceed. I called Zipp and got told to bring it to my local bike shop (as I’m Canadian). I am not the original owner of the wheel, so I don’t have a receipt for it’s original purchase (obviously). I’m also not sure where I should bring it exactly…
Would trying to find a local Carbon Fiber expert work in my favor? I’m kind of scared that if I send the wheel in they’ll charge me hundreds of dollars for the repair…
If it’s a relatively small/shallow nick I’d just seal it up with some 2-part epoxy to prevent moisture from getting in. If it’s deeper I guess it could be a structural issue but you didn’t seem to suggest it was anything too significant.
Same thing happened to mine (Super9 clincher disc) via shipping in a poorly packed box (axle of another wheel punctured the disc twice).
I put a valve cover sticker over the area and have raced on it for 2 Summers, no issues at all, no spreading, wheel is perfect true.
I had a hole in a Zipp 900 & sent it back to Zipp. They slapped something black resin on it & “sort of sanded it down” a bit. Sloppy job repair IMO, but it isn’t even flat like the rest of the disc, but a bump. You’re not going to notice anything performance wise unless you’re in Tony Martin’s class, that will affect you.
