Zipp 808 MAX Rear vs. 1080 Rear

Race weight about 215-220. Lower(ish) cadence. Anyone actually had experience riding both? Just looking for some opinions before pulling the trigger and ordering one.

Aerodynamically, we’re kind of splitting hairs here, it seems… but there’s a lot more that goes into how a wheel performs than grams of drag. And the techs at Zipp said the 2010 1080 was built differently this year, making it stronger…

And… go!

I’d get the 1080. It’ll be stiffer - shorter spokes. And it’ll allow you to more easily run any wheel you want up front.

Pure genius…

Fair enough… would it be something I would be able to stand up and hammer on?

oh yeah, you’re so powerful you’ll break a wheel. I see that all the time on the Pro Tour… wheels blowing up on every sprint finish.

You’re a triathlete. You’re not supposed to stand up and hammer. But if you need to, I’d be fairly confident that the wheels can handle your wattage. The less-stiff 303 clinchers did fine on the approx. 1200 (IIRC) watts that Fabian dished out to drop Boonen at Paris-Roubaix. So yeah, i think you’re covered.

Thanks. It’s more a rider weight thing than a wattage thing, and combinations thereof. Thanks for all the insight.

Not forgetting that Cancellara cracked one of his 303s during Paris-Roubaix.
