Zipp 404 firecrest (rim-shape) alternative

Hello,

I am looking for new race only wheelset. I think it should be zipp 404 f-c tabular. But I would also know are there any other alternatives?

  1. Wide aero-rim shape like firecrest.
  2. Better tabular, but clincher is ok.
  3. Weight.

I found:
FLO 60 -clinchers -weight +wide +price
ENVE SES 3.4 +wide +weight

ROL or Williams looks good, but rim-shape is like previous (not FC) version of zipps - that is why they are not interesting.

Could you help to find anything else?

Thank you.

Check out Boyd’s new carbon wheels, shapes a lot like FC but prices a lot closer to Williams for their ‘tubular’ tires.

The 44mm and 90mm look FC-esque but the 60mm looks more like the old Zipp hybrid-toroidal shape.

Yeah, seems funny. CoachBoyd was on these boards a week or two ago and explained their rationale for that decision which was based on the speeds and uses expected for the different rim depths and what that means in terms of yaw angles, handling needs and rim shapes. It does seem like the mid deep is a toroidal design with a bit of added brake track slope instead of the more bullet shaped FC designs.

Anyway, their wheels are definitely another option in terms of wide footprint designs but yeah, the mid deep is more of a wide footprint toroidal with a few tweaks which may not appeal to everyone.

.

Enve 6.7

If budget isn’t an issue you’d be hard pressed to find a faster, more durable carbon clincher out there.

Have you checked out Mercury wheels?

Bontrager D3
.

no love for HED Stingers on this board?

If so, allow me to put a vote in for Stinger 5, 6, or 7.

I have some 404s, but I’m seriously thinking of going with a wheelbuilder cover on the back, and my old HED3 trispoke up front this year.

Like a poor man’s Team Sky setup:

You could put a cover on spoked wheel, and pick up a used front H3 for not-that-much.

Have you tried November Wheels? I’d never heard of them before, but they certainly have good prices.

Thank you and other participants for interesting wheels.

Forgot to mention that I am looking for wheelset for road-racing bike, that is why HED H3 is not possible.

I made a table:
Sorted by weight:

and by price:

And decided that:
Tubular is better
If zipp404tub is initial point in weight, then:
Mercury - looks very interesting. +weight!ENVE 3.4 - too expensive and profile is lower than 404 (6.7 is too high) -price.Bontrager - it is at the same level as zipp 404 f-c.zipp 404 tub - it is just have a lot of proofs that they are really good :)Boyd 60mm - a bit heavier, but price is good.
Will try to find more information/tests about these wheels.

Thank you.

Something a bit different - the 23mm wide 50mm deep tub wheelset direct from Yishun.
Nominally a cyclocross wheelset but maybe worth a look:

$539 exc. shipping.

I’d also look at the Giant offerings, in clincher. They are about the weight/price of the deep carbon clinchers but with an aluminum brake track.

Farsports has a FC-esque profile wheels. ~$600 shipped. I own a set of their clinchers, they would be great wheels at twice the price.

Those were the ones I was thinking of - they look a cracking deal.

Have a look at the new Novatec R5. 50mm deep by 24mm wide.705g/885g.

http://novatecusa.net/project/r5/

50mm deep by 24mm wide.635g/800g for tubular, 705g/885g for clincher.

It looks good, but picture of the rim shows that it is not something like firecrest => these wheels out off the topic.

Looks like its not “firecrest” rim-shape.

Do you have a link? I saw pics over on WW, but can’t find that part number for sale.
