In 1997 I bought a Zipp 3001 (red/black, 650c) and I raced it for a few years until UCI made it “illegal”. In 97 I raced triathlons but in about 99-00 I switched to roadracing. Bought myself another frame and the Zipp was used very little. It has been sitting in my house since then…
Now I have been glancing at it for a while feeling it deserves to be on the road again…here are my loose plans:
Change stock fork for a profile BDC I happen to have- although that means I have to fix a new headset (the old one is glued ! has anyone performed this operation-how did it go?).
I also happen to have a vukachrono crankset somewhere…I guess that would fit nicely
I also have a hed aerobar that I could use at least to start with- but I 3t Brezza team or ventus 2 would be really nice (ventus 1 does not work because of the cableports).
I still have the zipp brakes…but tririg Omegas would be nice? I have one on my P4 and I rather like it. Maybe just get one for the front. I have a nice hed aero front wheel but nothing nice for the back- any suggestions? It´s 650c so not a lot of choice, disc would look the coolest of course (I have a simple trainingwheel).
Now biggest problem: I think the front derailleur cablechannels is pretty shot. So either just have a rear derailleur (which is how I run my P4) or- Installing Ultegra Di2, I guess you could drill a small hole for the cable down at the bottombracket? Mount the battery under the chainstay in some way perhaps- or in the beam!
I just finished a build on an old Javelin X-frame with 650’s. The front derailleur braze on isn’t usable by any mere mortal – that thing must be set for a 60/52 chainring set… Anyway, I went with a 55 up front, single chainring, and an 11-28 in back with a long cage derailleur. Might be the ticket for your Zipp.
You have a rare piece of american cycling history.
Could be quite valuable especially in good condition…
I cringe at the thought of the original design being parted out for contemporary parts.
Would you consider selling it?
PM me and send me some pics, I will make you an offer.

Dont chop it up, Leave it as is.
I also picked up a Zipp 3001 bike number 38/100 last week.
Full dura ace zipp wheels and boon cranks.
Its real nice but is too small for me.
where are you guys picking up these Zipp 3001’s?
hey, if yours is too small - if you ever consider selling PM me with details and photos.
willing to make you a fair offer.
looking for one for quite some time - forever trolling this forum for leads…
I was outbid on the one you saw on ebay, it went for $2800.
Located in North Carolina - fairly close too.
It was for a complete bike including vintage Zipp wheels and Dura Ace (8spd?) gruppo - all original & in very good cond.
You can even see the 15 year old cobwebs on the bike in all the photos.
I have a deal for a Zipp 3001 (650C) in the works right now.
Hello there, please do not drill the bottom bracket or modify anything on the Zipp bike. The Zipp frame has a cable routing. If the cable cannot go through the housing, then housing might be worn. Even if you punch the hole on the bottom bracket, still the cable would not go there. If you do not want it, I will buy it from you. My number is 315-708-5588. Have a great day.

The loctite on the headset is 20 yrs old and likely brittle. I had to change a threaded to a threadless on my 2001 a few years ago. Used a 1" headset remover and one or two crisp pops on the tool with a hammer and both ends came out.
Not a big deal changing the headset on your ZIPP! Warm it up with hot air an then use a 1" headset remover. It will come out .

Hello Dayne,
Please email me some photos of your Zipp 3001. I might have a Zipp frame set that would fit you well. Here is the link to my bikes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maxtbicycle/
Hi Dayne,
This bike would be my size, I am 5’6 1/2". If you are taller than me, that would be too small for you. What you have as base on my experience, your Zipp bike is small frame, small beam 650c. I would not recommend you to raise the beam so high. The beam at the top end at the bolt near the headset would crack. The reason that it would crack is when you paddle on saddle, the beam would bounce at least 1/4" travel. As soon as the beam bounce up, the end of the beam at the bolt joint would bang to the frame. That would break my heart.
Currently I am in New York for a short business trip and during my trip I have won auction on Zipp bike and other brands. Unfortunately, I will not see my Zipp bike in person yet for at least 3 months from now. The delivery is on the way to California, U.S.A. and I will update with more photos as soon as I can. Here is my latest update with photos available of new Zipp bike:
