ZIPP 2001 Brake Covers

Hey guys,

Any idea where I can get some replacement carbon brake covers that were originally used on the Zipp 2001 bikes? My rear brake cover seems to have disappeared either at the bike shop I took it to or on a ride. Thanks.

I don’t use them. Both my rear brakes are uncovered. It just makes it easier to access and clean. I always found the covers to be a pain in the …

Do you mean the thin carbon shells that came on the 3001? I didn’t think you got them on the 2001 bikes

I don’t use the covers either. As a matter of fact, I sold the rear brake because it was plain unsafe due to the craptacular stopping power.

I use the ‘oval aero rear brake’ on mine, MUCH better stopping power and it doesn’t hit the crankarm.

Can you post pics of the cable routing? I thought about using that brake but the angle looked wrong. I have a Campy delta and it’s a PIA.

Correction, the 2001 most definately came with the cover for the rear brake. I came to find out though that the cover made a great place for collecting liquid samples, like water or other endurance drinks and the associated crud that they would collect.

It seems like the cover would prevent a lot of the road debris from hitting the rear brake assembly. I have even seen front brake covers, but they seem rather tacky (http://www.duathlon.com/classifieds/detail/4414 for an example). Are there even any sources I could purchase the rear brake cover from?

By the way, it’s nice to know there are still people using Zipp 2001 and 3001s out there. Where do you Zipp 2001 bike owners usually ride, I’ve read that the bikes have been outlawed by some racing bodies. Below is a photoof my 2001 next to the Sony 17’’ monitor I sold,

I use the Zipp rear brake but a Shimano DA in the front. The rear has good enough stopping power, but as a former mountain bike instructor, most of my braking is done with the front brake anyways. I also use the HED third hand brake lever on the aerobar for the front brake.

As stated above the covers were indeed included with all Zipp 2001 and 3001 framesets. They amounted to a really nice collection bucket for everything you don’t want on the brake. Besides, the little black peices that hold the cover on get lost really easy : )

Not the best picture…but here’s how it looks. I’m toying around with the idea of making it a center pull by connecting the two arms and rigging something up, but haven’t had time yet. The set-up pictured works great stopping-power wise, is easy to clean, and never needs to be centered.

I have an entire rear brake setup - including cover, that I may want to sell as a package. If it was every used, it was only briefly and has been sitting in a box for years. PM me if you are interested.

I would be interested in the cover only, if you are willing to split the package.

Nope - I want to keep the complete brake setup as a package.
