Zipp 1080 tubular front wheel for a TT

I know it has been obsolete for years but when you look at the numbers on paper it seems like a fast wheel when properly set up. When used in a high speed low yaw situation like a fast TT it really seems appealing.

24.2 brake track width
27.5 overall width
108 deep

If paired with a CS 23mm it would still be within the 105% rule of rim to tire relationship and have low crr to boot.

Someone tell me I’m wrong.

You can’t be wrong with a wheel that looks that good

Not sure why they don’t sell them anymore, perhaps people struggled with the handling? Personally I’ve never really had issues with deep dish wheels. Raced a 70.3 in a storm with disc and 808 and only had some movement at the front, still very manageable and the disc was fine. This was 1 hour before the race start. I’d so go for it, but maybe have a 40mm front just in case.

Always, always a disc at the back - wind affects the rear very little. But up front on a gusty day a 80mm front can be a handful, especially as wind funnels through gateways or between buildings or as vehicles pass you. I always go to a race with an 80mm and a 40mm front wheel. Riding a 1080 is almost certainly the fastest on a still day, but I would not be riding it on windy days for sure.

I used to have a 1080 front back in the day… super fast wheel when still, but a beast when windy (it was noticeably more difficult to handle in cross-winds than an 808 pre-firecrest that I also had at the time).
It was a thing of beauty tho… people know you meant business when you rocked a 1080!

I say go for it, you can pick one up for virtually nothing these days.

If your based in the UK they don’t comply with CTT rules due to surface area.

Not based in the UK but I was wondering if the UCI has a similar rule. I can’t find anything that says it’s illegal to run it in a UCI ruled TT.

It’s not in this list so i would say not.

.

Nothing on that list is pre-2016.
There is an pre-2016 list for everything produced before.

That being said, I don’t know if a 1080 would be on that list.
I remember reading somewhere that it was allowed for TT events, but not mass-start.

I could be wrong.
It wouldn’t even be the first time today.

UCI wheel list is not applicable for TTs or for track. You can use a front disc in road TTs if you like (and people have done/will continue to do so on occasion)

I have a 1080 front and have used it for Sprint and IM distances. IM distance got sketchy in a few spots, but not unmanageable. When the wind was just right, holy-crap it was like riding a rocket. Still have the wheel and bring it out when I suspect wind conditions are ideal.

I had the clincher version. In gusty wind I would call it dangerous. For me the handling of a 808 FC front wheel with the right tire was and is much better and the 808FC tested as fast as the 1080.

You’re the go to aero expert, how do you feel the 1080 tubular with a 23mm CS would stack up at around 45-48km/hr against modern day wheels in the 90mm range?

There is an actual answer for this. The firecrest profile at an 808 depth is faster and more stable than a 1080. Because of how the firecrest profile is designed the same size for a 1080 would be way too wide, if I remember correctly and wouldn’t make sense to make. Basically the FC 808 made the 1080 irrelevant. That said, I loved how it looked when I had it on my p4, but there is no denying handling on a FC is significantly better to say the least.

Ah yeah I remember reading that years ago and why I ditched my 1080

My old P2 back in 2015 with 1080 set. After that I went to Zipp 900 disc and 808 firecrest front
