YouTube influencer, future champ, delusional, disrespectful, what is it?

I think he’s just engaging in that philosophy of shoot for the moon and if you miss at least your aim was high.

Not realistic or achievable, but he’s just dreaming and living the dream.

That can work in certain situations, but when you are 36 and swim 1:30 pace, that ship has so obvioulsy sailed it’s just out of place

I thought his video about racing in Kona was excellent covering key challenges and conditions better I think than almost anyone else.

I wish Matt all the best maybe it’s not realistic but I don’t think it’s disrespecting the current wc to say I want to be wc. Maybe impossible maybe delusional but as an Ager going all in on tri as least he’s living is dream while he still can. As TBE mayweather said in boxing… I call myself the best ever (TBE) not to disrespect any other boxer. Because every fighter needs to believe they are the best ever…. If you don’t. You in the wrong sport.

So he made a new video about becomming WC? He made one 2-3 years ago two and how his 5’-year plan would get him there. I hated it because it was so unrealistic and you cant just say -10 mins every discipline year on year. He is way too big to be a good triathlete anyway.

I’m sure he is a super nice guy, and is living the dream in some way. So why not just market it like that instead of the WC crap. He gives good advise etc. but lack of being realistic grinds my gears.

What would be more realistic but still high bar would be AG-WC. And something i would allow

On one hand I’m shocked and appalled by the hostility and toxicity shown to this guy - a fellow sportsman and athlete. It honestly makes me uncomfortable reading cmart’s comments. Mate, chill. Take a deep breath.

On the other I’m relieved to see there are athletes who are caring, supportive and mature. Thank you - I hope we see each other at the races, regardless of who wins, let’s shake hands and be happy we finished.

Which toxicity and hostility? I’m just calling it bs because it is bs. I’m just not blindly positive towards influencers.

As Ricky Gervais said, just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

I remember being at the usat coaching clinic and Bobby McGee (world renowned run specialist) asks 50 people becoming level 1 coaching “who’s going to coach an olympian”…I raise my hand, expecting 50 other hands to be raised…no one else raised their hand. I kinda half joked as he said “that’s who athletes want to be coached by”, and I kinda laughed…I just assumed everyone wanted to coach to the highest level, just like every athlete “wants” to win a WC, even if “delusional”.

Because your tone and comments are, you may not think you are…. but it seems many think otherwise!

Whether you like influencers or not, you are doing a better job for him as now he is getting a lot more clicks and views and probably subscribers. Ironic….

If you are not blindly positive, why search them out, just ignore and go on with your day!!

I never said I want him to have less viewers or clicks. I actually don’t care what this guy is doing with his channel. I also said above his videos themselves are sometimes quite good and he’s very open (just briefly before going full circle and tell everybody how he has figured everything out now but anyways). I mean if he gets more clicks from that, why not.

Again, I just don’t like influencers talking bs and I find it disrespectful to say he’s gonna be World Champion, that’s all. When you’re going public with a very polarizing opinion, well your opinion is exactly that, public. And it will be discussed. Otherwise don’t go public.

YMMV and that’s ok

You seem to be the one who was offended enough to start a thread? I don’t think the people defending him are offended, I for one just feel the world needs more positive people like Matti and less of the cynicism some people in this thread are spreading.

You complain that he is an influencer spreading bs, but from what I can tell, he’s not peddling some product or telling people how they should train. He doesn’t even appear to be sponsored?

He’s just sharing what he’s up to, and what his dreams are. There are so many bigger names in the industry worth getting upset about because they push products, coaching and mentalities that are actually harmful. I don’t see how this guy is doing any harm sharing his story to ~7k subscribers

I’m one of the people who has absolutely no issue with you calling this guy out, nor with what you’ve been saying about him. I may not agree that his videos/approach are disrespectful to top pros, but for sure agree that it’s at least a disingenuous influencer-type money grab. Maybe not quite a scam artist but I wouldn’t argue with anyone who feels that way. At the end of the day it all seems pretty harmless - there are certainly way worse youtube influencers out there. I would never watch his videos, and if there was anybody I knew who was watching them I’d make sure they understood the context. If they understand the context and still want to watch, I have no problem with that.

Yup. At least he’s not taking a break from his video to talk about his mattress and how you should buy one. He paid for his canyon…so if he really likes it and reps it I would believe what he says.

I’ve watched Matti for a while now. Probably the past year as I’m just a tri sicko and absorb as much content and info as possible. While I think his vision of being world champion one day is extreme and beyond far fetched, if that’s what drives and motivates him on the daily, good for him. I feel bad for him in a way though…he looks to train hard and likes the numbers he sees in training, but on race day, he falls apart. I wonder if the internal stress, maybe something he doesn’t even notice, about being so public with his training and life is leading to pressure he doesn’t even realize. I have no idea how you can continue to train expecting things on race day and those never show up. In my one IM this year, I went in with a race plan and hit it perfectly. I had put pressure on myself, but that pressure pushed me to ensure I hit my numbers. I hope he figures it out as he seems like a super nice, genuine person, with a loving personality. Tough to see someone dreaming of being a world champion push less watts than I did in my IM this year and therefore have a slower bike time. I’d have to guess it’s nothing to do with the body, but all mental. When you want it so bad, sometimes that can be your downfall. He will never be WC, but would love to see him deliver on a race and put out the numbers and times he thinks he can. That should be the journey of his channel. A behind the scenes looks into a life of a pro triathlete trying to deliver his training numbers on race day. In the end, that’s what we all try to do, but maybe by tampering expectations and focusing on what’s right in front of him, rather than shooting for the moon, he’ll continue to make the proper baby steps forward which could get him to his physiological best.

Fellow tri sicko here  — I think he’s making completely wrong assumptions about what he’s capable of. I actually got banned from commenting on his YouTube after pointing out that he swims the same times in the pool (or even slower) than Sam Long, yet was talking like he’s making the front pack for sure. Also, when he talks about his bike power, he’s always doing his workouts in ERG mode — which is basically like riding uphill. For me, holding power (especially high Z2 to Z3) in ERG mode is much easier than doing it outside on the flat.

ERG uphill feeling? Maybe at the end of a ramp test. For me ut feels like a downhill, I hate the high expected rpm.

Anyways. Looks like we have our new era triathlon taken/ sanders / sam long amateur level start influencer. I so wonder where taren is now since he went all into tri / kettle bells

Don’t know about your trainer but I can ride almost any rpm I want in erg mode.

Funny thing he thought it was a short course yard pool but actually it was a 20m pool, so those 55s are for 80m. But that’s the thing about him suddenly he’s breaking all his records by seconds and he’s like I got it now but it would never occur to him that the pool maybe is shorter than he thinks it is.

I haven’t watched his video, probably wont after reading though this thread. But how do you not know the pool is that short. I mean I can get in any pool and swim the first lap and tell you whether it is 25m or 25 yards. Or I could tell if it were 20m too. Am I the only one that counts strokes here? Presumably all triathletes at this level have swam millions of yards/meters by now?

Yes, YTA

Didn’t call anybody that but if it makes you feel better, go ahead
