A week or so ago while Slowman was penning his great series on the past, current and future of running shoes, I was recording a podcast on Endurance Planet . The lifetime view Dan brought out in his series was great. Through my lifetime in running shoes my view is quite similar to Slowman but because my lens, it’s also quite different. Combined they make a fairly big week for running shoe information.
I think I’d want a Newton MV2 or Newton Distance with 5 lugs, rubber on the heel, a 4mm drop and the stack height of the neutral shoe from the Brooks Pure 3 line. I’m currently using a 2010/2011 year Newton Distance S and the neutral shoe from the Brooks Pure 3 line; I guess I want the best of both worlds!
a zero drop Brooks Launch…
A highly-cushioned, 4mm drop, Zoot Kiawe.
Great Podcast…thanks for all your contributions to the sport!
You ought to print aa transcript or do an article with the content.
Saucony Fasttwitch with a wide toe box like an Altra. Just need a little more room in my fasttwitch. Anything with 4mm drop or less is fine by me

New balance minimus Hi-Rez.
Absolute genius of a shoe.
It’s the Skora Form. Zero drop 13mm tall, but with a leather upper that molds itself to how my foot is shaped and moves. Custom fit
I love Nike Free, but the tread wears out too fast. If anyone knows of a similar runner that has more life expectancy, let me know and that might just be the perfect shoe for me.

are these made in Portland? Kind of a niche, cultish, hipster running shoe that has never really caught on? I’m from Oregon and try and support local companies…might have to give them a look!
Are you looking for
The fit of the Kiawe in higher stack height and 4mm drop? The feel of the Kiawe in higher stack height and 4mm drop? You just love the Kiawe and want a training shoe to go with it?
To add a bit more to the podcast:
Right Shoe/Right Form = Quiet Running
Right Shoe/Poor Form = Loud Running
Wrong shoe/Poor Form = Loud/painful running
.
There was nothing wrong with plimsolls.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plimsoll_shoe
We wore them all day every day from 1964 to 1974, did cross country in them, played football in them every break time, lunch time and after school. We wore then doing athletics running on grass and cinders.
We rode out bikes wearing them. We played tennis in them on concrete courts, grass courts, clay courts. We played table tennis in them.
And we rode our bikes wearing them.
The only time we didn’t wear them was in the swimming pool.
No one had any problems with their feet, ankles or knees
No one drank unless thirsty and no one needed to take electrolyte tablets, or gels or recovery protein shakes.
Then in about 1981, Gatorade arrived and in 1982 Nike came out with its first TV advert. Suddenly people suffered from dehydration and knee and ankle pain.
Plimsolls are the perfect sports shoe.

If you’re Ok with just a bit more drop the new DS Trainer is pretty nice. I’m loyal to Saucony and therefore all my shoes are 4mm drop but I was so intrigued by how much Asics had lightened the DS Trainer I gave it a shot and am impressed and don’t really notice the additional drop.

This is exactly what I want!

Can I say all three? I really want a shoe that fits exactly like the Kiawe but has enough cushion for long training runs and marathon racing. I love the fit and feel of the upper. Love the fact that it’s a neutral shoe. But I get too beat up to do long runs in it. I want a shoe with Kinvara (or Cortana) cushioning that otherwise fits and feels just like the Kiawe. It would be the best shoe in the world if I could run I it all the time.

No, our HQ is in PDX but they are not made in the US. Our pricepoint for some of the shoes is already higher than some and we did not feel doubling it was worth the “Made in US” sticker. However there were of course some other reasons as well.
