By what mechanism does your product, or any other similar product, actually affect the muscles? I understand that these things are primarily skin irritants, but I’m at a loss as to how the muscles benefit.
Yep, I used to…now I’m careful to avoid the back of the knee until the very end, and really rub it in. I think what happens is b/c you can’t see it when applying, you tend to skip over the area a bit & don’t get it really absorbed into the skin & it clumps up. The area is also (relatively) the most sensitive area on the legs, so you definitely feel it there a bit more.
Gracious God, make each of us an instrument of your grace. Weave us into a community showing forth your power and tenderness. Bless us and our differences and under gird our courage to stand together. We call on you today to gather us in your love. Lead us to better know you and glorify you on each step of the journey of our lives. In the name of Jesus, let us now keep silence and breathe in the love of God. Amen.
Most use capsicum, the primary ingredient in pepperspray. The amount of perceived “heat” is based on how much capsium is used, 1-5%.

I met Dan Socie of http://www.soigneur.net/ last year at ICEMAN and really liked his product, plus it is about half the price of Mad Alchemy. Thus, that’s what I’ve been using this year and have no reason not to going forth.
Hey Dan, just ordered a tub of your stuff! I had a bad reaction to Mad Alchemy, but the DZ stuff seems to work well, but ehhh…not thrilled. I’ll let you know what I think!
Mad Alchemy is by far my favourite Embro (and chamois cream).
The Russian Tea which is a medium heat is my go to, but the Uber Secret is also nice, as are the various non-warming versions (I have the Embrocation Cycling Journal Team Issue from a couple years ago) when you just want some water proofing on warmer spring/fall rides or something to rub into your muscles to get going and provide a nice shine/scent.
So, I just got an order of Mad Alchemy Medium after reading this thread. I just sample savle’d a leg with little to no result. It is kind of tingly, but thats about it. I can’t imagine this actually making a difference on a ride if I cant even notice it at the office. I used around a teaspoon slather on just my calve and shin.
Should I expect more? Am I doing it wrong? Should I use more? Is the additional warmth from the insulating properties or a perceived warmth from the chemical irritation?
I am a (i) when it gets cold, so I sincerely want this to work. Any feedback is appreciated.

I specifically asked the product rep on this thread how this stuff is supposed to work (he did say ask if anyone has questions), and got for a response.
These products are skin irritants (capsicum, usually) that give the sensation of warmth, but unless there’s something very sophisticated going on, it doesn’t actually generate heat in your muscles.
that is what I figured, but I read a ton a positive reviews so I thought i’d give it a go. I will say that it has started “burning” my calf. Sort of a icy-hot thing. I can see where it would be relaxing to use post-workout before putting on compression socks. I’ll still have try it on a ride and see if it makes all the difference.

So far I’m rather “meh”
yeah, you should probably actually use it how it’s meant to be used before deciding if it’s for you or not, I rarely ride in sub 50 degree weather without it on my legs and put some on my lower back before most rides if it’s cooler than 65 degrees. Takes about 30 minutes for the stuff I use to really kick in, then lasts a good 3-4 hours, different people will react more/less to the same heat level, ‘medium’ for me is about as much as I can bear.
Will it hurt a wetsuit? Is it still effective on the bike if you put it on before the swim?
I used it in my first HIM because it was a cold, rainy day - and did not want to add layers for the bike. I had it on my transition towel and as I stripped my wetsuit off in transition got it on my legs and arms - worked great.
You cannot judge embrocation from just putting it on indoors - definitely works differently as you are pumping your legs… it even seems to migrate when I put it on my toes for cold bike rides - and my whole foot ends up burning (with the mild MA btw)
