maybe someone can explain something to me. i have never seen any post or promotion for xterra wetsuits which sells them at regular price. they’re basically always discounted 50% or more off. how is it really a discount if they’re ALWAYS *on sale *at that price?
Dunno, but they’re way cheaper than other wetsuits. I got my speedsuit for much less than others cost.
Not sure but if you paid full price for an Xterra wetsuit or anything from Rudy Project you’re a sucker ![]()
.
I have no beef with Xterra. They are one of our tri club ‘Sponsors’ but in return for being promoted on our websites and other communication we get the same discount as everyone else in the world gets it seems. I ended up taking down the banner ad, not because I think their wetsuits are not a good deal, but because I just feel stupid advertising an exclusive club discount when clearly it is anything but.
If anyone is interested membership to our tri club is $69 per month - usually $4,000 a day. I have a promo code. ![]()
All marketing. Raise the crap out of the retail price and always have crazy discounts out there. Rudy and Xterra are always doing it for free publicity.

that’s exactly my point. i know a lot of people with xterra wetsuits and every one of them purchased it using the *super duper special exclusive sponsor-only 50% off deal. *so they *sponsor *your club and get the same exact discount as every other person who purchases the suit. i just dont get it.
It’s the Joseph A. Bank business model. They can still make money at the “discounted” prices, but if people are unaware or need something immediately they make a lot of money selling it at “retail” price.

Bingo. I’ve realized that it’s not something that should be annoying or frustrating, it just is the way it is. I’ve learned to look at the “normal” retail price as some fraction of the MSRP. Basically, expect to pay ~50-70% of MSRP to purchase one of their products on an average day. If you pay less than that you got a deal, if you pay more than that you overpaid. If you paid exactly 60% of MSRP then you neither got a deal nor got ripped off, you paid approximately what the company planned on having someone pay to purchase that product.

Yup…just picked up 2 suits @ JAB for $300 total. “Retail” was $650 each.
If you time it right, you can get very good deals (and not just using their retail as the comparison stick), but if you buy “in a pinch” you get skewered.
Exactly. A good deal should not be measured by “% off retail saved” despite what your better half may want you to think (“Look honey, I saved 80% on this!”).
If it’s a good value for the amount of cash I fork over it…it’s a good value. And if Xterra makes good suits for the amount most people pay for it then that’s what matters to me as a potential customer.
