Xentis Mark 1 vs. Hed 3

Is there any information/comparisons between the Xentis Mark 1 and Hed 3?

The original Xentis Mark 1 does quite poorly compared to the Zipp 808, which is comparable to the HED3. The new Mark 1 TT does better, but is still not as fast as the 808. It’s a very good wheel, though. If you search, there are some results with the new Mark 1 TT from TOUR.

used all 4 of those wheels HED3, zipp808, xentis mark1 and TT’s and the results are,

HED3’s would never ride them again, never had a good race on them and by far the worst 3/4 spoke wheel ive used

xentis mark1’s ride well, pretty quick, safe in cross winds and very well made

xentis TT’s these are the wheels i use when i want to go quick, handle better than a HED3, better made than pretty much anything else and very quick, even use one on the rear now instead of my mavic disc which was better than my zipp disc.

808’s, quick but never had so many hub/bearing issues in my life, the other thing was that after a few miles most of the spokes would start to rotate, dont know how much slower an aero spoke is when its rotated 90degrees but it cant help.

oh used a nimble for a while as well, right at the top with xentis when it comes to build quality, both run on DT hubs and finish is amazing. As for speed i would say about the same as the mark1’s

last thing, got a pair of the xentis HM’s as well, same shape/profile as the mark1’s but silly light, won a few hilly/sporting courses on them this year so not really slow, almost to nice to use though, everything about them is perfect, if only they made a HM TT then all other wheels would be obselete.

To kind of add on to what Jordan said. The amazing thing about the Xentis was not just that it didn’t do well but that it was the first composite spoke wheel mos people had ever seen do worse at higher yaw angles. The Xentis Mark One did well at the fairly rare 0-5 yaw, then got progressively worse. They also did well in an indoor track simulation, which at most is a 5-7.5 degree yaw situation.

I think the Hed 3 is an aero enough wheel that I don’t need to talk it up too much. However, in seperate years under the same test conditions it was about 5 watts faster than the Mark1. You can also find other tests which agree that the Hed 3 is near or at the top.

In the case of Time trialing, I would pass on the original Mark One. One other consideration, the Xentis wheels retail for about $500 more than Hed 3s.

HED3’s would never ride them again, never had a good race on them and by far the worst 3/4 spoke wheel ive used

Worst? Meaning what?

We just had a visit from the xentis boss Friedrich , he had a copy of the latest wheel test from two german magazines and xentis were pretty much rated best in both tests - one looked a pretty extensive and technical test .

The Mark 1 TT - came out in front , and I believe that included at various yaw angles .

Ill try to get a copy of the article sent over and translated .

.

I will be road testing both the Xentis Mk 1 TT and the Xentis Mk 1 HM and will post it on the homepage when it is done.

Did you happen to catch the great shot of Timo and his Xentis clad Walser passing Normann out of T1 during today’s broadcast  I don’t care who you are those wheels make anyone look fast…

Haven’t ridden the Mark 1 TT for long but it feels very much like the 808 as a front wheel. Its very easy to accelerate and doesn’t have a harsh ride. Not sure about the speed and crosswind, had not much time.
My HED3 of long ago always felt heavy to start. Also heavy to maintain speed compared to Nimbles or Xentis. I also experienced a high speed wobble going downhill on the HED’s.One advantage is the feel with the HED is that it can withstand bumps and holes better, stronger build.

Any chance that you could post graphs in the mean time. Also; when you say pretty much…

Didn’t TOUR conclude that the original Mark 1 was a whopping 1 second faster over a 40k TT than a Ksyrium SL? Talk about a waste of $

Pretty much - mmm, maybe not the best choice of word, from my extremely limited german and trying to translate what Friedrich was saying, and looking at german grahs the mark 1 TTs came out top .

Theres little doubt the Mark 1 TTs are a much faster wheel than the standard Mark 1s , they also use a patented “wave” rim profile that Xentis are saying big things about (I asked the guys at sportspulse about their claims and they said it was valid though not be as sexy as dimpled golf ball technology)

Anyway - will be getting as much data as possible next week .

Is it a sad thing that I’m really looking forwards to seeing these results? I’ve even bookmarked this thread so I can come back and check it regularly! Of course, it’s entirely for work based reasons. Obviously!

I’m fascinated to know what this wavy rim is though. I’m guessing that we’re talking about a rim that doesn’t point towards the middle?

What we /really/ need are aerofoils that can change direction based on the direction of the wind!

Can you elaborate on this comment - do you attribute your performance to the wheels?

I have ridden a variety of wheels and love the H3’s
