XC Skiing?

Is that some kind of crazy Canadian sport?

Where can someone who lives in the Southeast U.S. try this?

Or do I have to visit Canadia?

You can go to New York, Vermont or New Hampshire, come to Canada or go to Colorado, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, or Alaska.

Actually go to California…those guys have the right idea…keep the snow out of the way in the mountains so you don’t have to deal with it in day to day life and just go play in the snow if you want, but you can ride, swim, run and surf the rest of the time. I’ve never skied and open water swam in the same day, but I’m going to do it once in my life…swim off the Pier at Santa Cruz in the morning and XC ski at Royal Gorge in the afternoon!

For starters, give us a general location of where you live and one can direct you to different ski areas. Skiing is like biking (road-off road-triathlon/time trial-causal) in that a variety exists–on groomed trails (fast)-on ungroomed trails-bushwacking–then there is the skating verse classical methods. If one only focuses on classical, there is a no-snow ski that works anyway and provides a great workout. Check out catskier.com for details.

Actually going for a ski this afternoon. Should be around 80 F.

I used to roller ski quite a bit. Its a good substitute but not quite the same as the real McCoy.

XC Skiing threads are like white shoes,it’s bad manners to post this before Labor Day. I still have a few days to wear my white shoes.

Roller skis are fun, but make sure you learn to use them in a flat, controlled setting like a parking lot before going out on the open road. XC skiing has the highest cal/min expenditure in mainstream sports (34, I think), so it is a great way to cross train for quick sessions.

No snow = roller skiing

December is my month “off” and a roller ski a fair bit until the flakes fly. Do it a lot more since I’ve moved from New England to West “BY GOD” Virginia.

Only skating though…haven’t have the money to invest in another set of rollers skis yet for classic technique.

I love tackling small hills and then coming down them with no brakes, makes anything on a bike seem boring.

I try to XC ski every weekend from the first snow through March if possible, and even race in Feb for fun.

Greatest overall workout you can ask for. Very low impact…except when you crash going 25mph+

I know lots of people roller ski in areas where there isn’t reliable snow.

I believe the ST “rule” is the 1st of October - though that may be for snow-specific conditions, etc.

NO!! NO!! NO!!! check the calendar people. You dont see me starting a pond hockey thread!

Go swim/bike/run/rollerski.
