This likely has been covered in previous threads-if so, please direct me there if you know the thread as the terms I used wasn’t finding it-but is there any general rule-of-thumb that anyone has seen to convert cross-country miles to running miles? I’m working on my training plan for a winter marathon, and want to sub in some running with XC skiing later in the plan (if we have snow, but being in Minnesota, we should have some come January). Also, I don’t plan on substituting all of my running with skiing-just for a change of pace and an option if the snow does come. Thanks for the insight!
I ski by time not distance… hope to be on snow in 6-8 weeks.
I can’t help you with the XC conversion but when I was still sculling (rowing) my single, I pegged it at one-to-one. My rational was that although rowing was less stressful (less impact) on my joints, it took me slightly longer to travel the same distance as running. On the water I could race 2,000 meters in about 7 - 7.5 mins depending on conditions and can run sub 7 mins for 2k on the track pretty consistently.
My originial plan was do something similar and keep my HR in the ranges I would expect for running, but didn’t know if others were doing anything differently. I’m hoping for 8-10 weeks until snow-want to have more time to build running base and not have the option to hit the trails!
do you have much xc ski experience?? If not, then i’d say not to worry about how far you go and just go by time. If you’re worried about losing conditioning…don’t.
Go by time - not distance. And if you’re specifically looking to (cross)train for running, ski classic.
Nordic skiing to running miles depends entirely on the terrain, condition and your form (efficiency). I would go by time and heart rate. If you really want to get into then you could start trying to match up effort running to effort skiing through HR but as the season goes on your efficiency skiing can change by huge amounts. When you start out relatively short workout will seem really tougher than running but since its sans impact you can end up with workout durations much more inline with cycling.
I don’t ski a lot but when I do I don’t log it as any running. It only shows up in my comments section.
