With the hill and the technical bits, it’s another course made for Duffy and Knibb, barring disaster Duffy wins, but the question is can they (or their group) build a big enough gap for Knibb to hold on for the podium over the olympic distance…
The early hill should be a big help for JB, that is right out of their playbook. I gotta say I like these 1 Brownlee races, I think it keeps the outcome a little less conspicuous. For instance I could see JB going with a small group and the whole podium comes from that group, or he stays away but only like 30s and Mola runs him down, or he gets caught by Mola’s group somewhere near 20k but Mola had to work too much and JB runs away, etc.
For the women it is a mater of when Duffy wants to go away. I’d like to see her test out the others and keep a few more around for longer. But I suspect she will just go in lap 1 and that will be that. She looks like she now runs KZ speed so maybe 30-60s faster than last year. There isn’t anyone in this field who can run her down if she comes off the bike in front.
Hewitt could probably run back 60seconds on Duffy… but it’s highly unlikely that she’ll be within that margin off the bike (more likely she’ll be 45s down out of the water, bike like a fiend in the second chase pack to get up to the main chase, and come into T2 with the main chase pack 2min down on Duffy, running for the minor placings…
It is true, Hewitt on her best days is probably a chunk of seconds faster runner than Duffy. It is just that her best days are getting really spread out these days.
The cobbles are steep and nasty but fairly short. The weather calls for thunderstorms on Saturday. Keep the rubber side down!
have fun
John
Dang it… well, might make it more interesting for the spectators.
Cobbles, t-storms… take whatever number you were thinking of running for tire pressure and subtract 10-15PSI… Your skin will thank you…
What time, UK time will this be on?

The women’s race is at ~ 6:30pm London time on Saturday and the men’s race at the same time of day on Sunday. It now looks like there is a good chance that the rain may be through by race time on Saturday.
Hugh
Yeah, Zaferes and Kasper definitely didn’t let Flora do anything. She did it to them.
I’d love to see Kanute sneak away one of these days like he did in Chicago.

Yes, if Javier gets away with Jonny and they put time on Mario then that would sound reasonable. If they don’t shake Mario then I’m not so sure Javier and still outrun him even at the 10k distance. I’m interested to see how much time Flora and Taylor will gain on the rest of the women and if Taylor can make it to the finish without being caught.
The radar shows it still raining all around Montreal this morning but things look like they’re moving in the right direction for the Women’s pro race. I hope everyone racing this morning keeps the rubber side down.

It’s all on Gomez’s swim, he had a terrible swim in Edmonton came out with Mola and I think he made the difference in clawing back that lead.
I’m interested in this swim. It seems to me from hearing Barrie Shepley that Gomez chose poorly at the Edmonton start line. Varga had a tweet talking about how the course had a long straight before the first turn buoy. I’m still trying to figure out what type of swim course breaks up the swim more. I’ve been fooled by choppy versus smooth swims before and my guess would be that an early turn buoy would be more disruptive to the pack than a late one. But I’m prepared to be wrong again…

Gomez went opposite to Mola and Alarza but it couldn’t have made that much of a difference because Brownlee went the same side as Gomez I thought Varga had too? All’s Gomez needed to do was stay on Brownlees toes.
Well done Ashley Gentle. Great non-wetsuit swim leading to no need to chase on the bike set up a very nice run. I was really glad to see her win this after being a bride’s maid so many times. It appeared that Flora just wasn’t “feeling it” today. It’s easy to forget that we’re all human and have down days. Taylor Knibb did a very nice job for a 19 year old after putting time on the front of the bike. It certainly went counter to my intuition. Perhaps Rue St. Jean Baptiste wasn’t that bad after all? It will be interesting to see if JB and a few others can split things up tomorrow.

Katie Zaferes led the women out of the water in 18:07. I know she ran track at Syracuse but does anyone know if she swam growing up, maybe through HS??? Wondering if she is a pure or semi-pure AOS??? If she is an AOS, then this should be publicized to give all other AOS hope. ![]()
Gentle really took advantage of the long transition run to get herself into position to get to the front of the race on the bike. Today showed that Duffy is running better than last year but still needs that really hard bike to take out everyone else’s legs. Great race by Joanna Brown, looking strong at home. And the most interesting thing Barrie Shepley taught me today: Kirsten Kasper has deep Canadian roots. I think she should accessorize her look with a few more maple leaves before 2020 rolls around 😀

Yes, she took advantage of the long run to transition but she also swam really well being only 20s from the lead out of the water instead of her usual 45s to 1min for olympic distance.

yep, great swim for Ashleigh, that is all it took, she is a power on the bike and an awesome runner, we just haven’t seen her in that front pack or that close before, she has now shown what she is capable of unhealthy if she manages a good swim, imagine if she was feeling good before race start what she could have done.
