I am currently on antibiodics and dealing with major sinus conjestion and sore throat, strep! I am running my first half marathon on Sunday at the Half at the Hampton in NH and am more than likely just going to go now and job with my wife at a pace that will probably be near the 10:30m/m range. I was expecting to be 7:5x range and unless things change drastically by the time I go to bed on Saturday night it looks like this will be a very long jog. The plus side I guess is that no matter what it will be a PR.
Do your wife a favor and if you run, run your pace!
Hug her at the finishline.
Why would you sign up for Marathon at the height of flu season:

“Flu season most often begins in January and February,” says Dr. Lyn Finelli with the CDC, which tracks the flu’s spread across America. “It usually peaks in February or March and lasts until about May.”

The timing of flu is very unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. in January or February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May.

Because even though I have 3 kids (which everyone knows are breeding grounds for sickness) I still plan on never getting sick. I blame my co-workers more than anything since they come to work sick instead of using their sick time.
No offense, but that is a not a very good reason to sit on the sidelines.
You’re talking about not signing up for a race for Feb-May!
To the OP, too bad about the timing of that sickness. Sometimes, those things happen. I am a month out of running my first marathon and just got a head cold. I hope it doesn’t impact training too much.
I’d just recommend you take it easy this week, drink plenty of fluids, and get lots of rest.
go out for a run now. when everything starts draining out of your nose, go another mile. once your sinuses are clear use a netty pot and flush those bad boys. drink 6 packets of emergen-c and see if that helps.
I have not exercised at all since Monday and will take today as one more rest day. Tomorrow I will head out and see how I feel. I have had a netty pot on my “need to get” list for awhile now, but still have not got around to actually buying one. I have two sister-in-laws that swear by them.
they’re definitely a quick way to “clean you out”. when i get sinus stuff, I dont usually feel that terrible if i can get everything out (temporarily), which is why I said that about the netty. just use it a ton. once you feel cleaned out, keep using it to try and find back against any bacteria thats left.
That explains why the Boston Marathon has never been very popular.
Race? - Not while it’s dumping snow in the mountains.

I’ve used a sports bottle. Some warm water with a bit of salt. Squirt that up there and flush. Works great with dusty DIY Home Improvement as well.
I did two Halfs last year after colds. Did them about 15 minutes off my PR. The important thing is to have the bulk of the training done before the cold and get recovered before the Half. A few missed training runs just before it won’t be the end of the world.
Even at 7:5x pace its not like you were going to win. Just go out and run. You may surprise yourself. Besides if you run a 1:50 or something nobody will give a shit anyways.
My advice is stay flexible. When the body “wants” to recover it can do so very quickly. However, if nothing changes you might want to either job it or bag it altogether. When you race enough these things happen from time to time.
“I am running my first half marathon on Sunday”
Since you are only running it and not “racing” it…who cares? Besides if you suck, it’s your first one, which means you will PR on your next one! Relax and go have a good time!
I had the same issue before my first half marathon a few years back. I could tell you, do not take any benadryl the night before. Definitely do not use an old sports bottle filled with tap water as a neti pot. Make sure to get distilled water, people have gottne serious infections when using tap water. Now that I covered what not to do, I agree with above posters that said go out and have fun. Enjoy it and have a good excuse if you do not perform as well as you expect and destroy your new PR next race.

As my company does business in thermometers, I’ll just say that this Cough & Cold season has absolutely SUCKED. We are way off forecasts and our sales blow.
C’mon people…get sick. I need the $$$.
