Wrong Running Shoe = Injury?

I have been running with the Asics Hyperspeeds for the last yr with not a single problem. I recently got the DS Racers and I have been running with them 1-2 times per week no more than 8 miles per run. About 3 weeks ago I ran on a treadmill for 54 min and hurt my hip. Is it possible that having used a stability shoe it could have been the cause of the injury???

I dont run on treadmills ever… I dont need a stability shoe…

Did 10 weeks of base running starting in Mid November with 2 weeks of low mileage(15-20 miles) all my other weeks were in the 30-40 range with 1 tempo run and 1 long run per week and never felt a single thing aside from soreness from the long runs.

SHould I just stop using the DS Racers if I dont need stability?

Depends on your gait. hard to tell from the internet, but a bad fitting shoe can cause all kinds of havoc. My last pair cost me two toenails and teetered me on the edge of IT band problems before I put them in the “donate” box at my LRS.

John

I did a shoe change in December. Within 5 runs I was crippled. Went back to my old model, no problems.

There ya go.

LOL yea Im beginning the think that even the smallest of stability may have thrown me off a bit and enough to cause the injury… guess they will turn into gym shoes! too bad cuz the look badass for a pair of flats

Why do you think it is the shoe?

Because I used to run with the nike flats that were replaced by the Lunar Racers and I switched twice. Once to a pair of Mizuno Elixir and another time to a pair of Brooks T4. Both times I switched I got patella tendonitis, soon as I went back to Nikes and was pain free after 3 mths of rehab both times. This time I used the Asics and only them for the entire yr and was injury free. I start mixing in a new pair that has some support and I start getting hip pains. Its consistent with the past but it may have been caused by the treadmill also…

There are many variables, as noted, that could have played a role in your injury. With that said, “yes” running in a shoe with some stability (DS is on the low end of the stability continuum) when it is not needed could cause problems. Essentially, dual density midsoles act like a dynamic medial post providing a denser platform on the inside of the shoe to help give support against pronation. Theoretically this changes the position of the ground reaction force about the ankle, as well as the knee and hip. With some exceptions, the more motion control in a shoe the more the ground reaction forces moves to the inside (medial). This can cause increase torques (varus direction) at the hip and knee and puts distractive force on the lateral structure of the knee and hip. Not to mention blocking some pronation and effecting transverse plane motion (rotation) of the tibia and femur as well. Biomechanical alignment and injuries aside, pronation is your friend in a lot of ways!

Bottom line, the force position going up the the chain was likely changed (therefore torque change) with the change in shoe type. Whether this was enough to cross a threshold to injury is debatable. Having a long history in one type of shoe can predispose to a degree. Why did you use the DS trainers?

Cheers!
