Wrist osteoarthritis and road bikes

Hi all,

I had a crash about five years ago and broke my scaphoid–two surgeries required. Been having some wrist pain in the last year and went back to see the ortho. Seems like I’ve developed OA in the distal radioulnar joint, which is apparently rare but likely the result of crash and surgery. Been told to limit things that aggravate it. Once thing I’ve realised is that the road bike handlebar is not great–you get ulnar deviation from multiple grips and certainly more weight on bars than dodgy wrists would like. My physio reckons that a mountain bike handlebar would be better.

I guess I’m looking for any similar stories and what the potential risks would be should I keep riding my road bike. I’m 44 and need this wrist for a while yet (I hope). I’m also loath to quit cycling or turn my Cervelo into a flat bar bike!

Cheers,
Alex
