Wrench question. Shimano 10-speed Cassette Compatability

Okay I’m stumped. I tried a simple replacement of a Shimano Ultegra 6700, 10 speed (12-23) cassette with a Shimano Ultegra 6600 HG, 10 Speed (14-25) cassette and the splines do not match up. Not even close. Does Shimano make different spline patterns for their cassettes such as hyperglide vs non hyperglide?
Thanks for your help.

Can you post pictures? Because this doesn’t make sense. The spline pattern has been the same since at least the 8 speed days into now 11 speed.

Nope, doesn’t make sense. The spline pattern has been the same for about 30 years, with some small changes to accommodate 11T cogs and 8speed, then 11spd (road) cassettes. The new 12s XTR is a new spline pattern. but that’s it.

You know it’s a keyed pattern, right? It only goes on one way. So, you have to rotate it until it goes on. You can use one of the free floating cogs by itself to prove this to yourself.

I have just about every iterations of Shimano 10S cassettes.
Maybe check if you put the appropriate small spacer between the cassette (if needed sometimes) when swapping cassettes.
I sometimes have to put a 0.5mm spacer depending on how the biggest cog carrier is machined, a little different from Shimano through the years…

EDIT: OH! Just read better now. The 6600 14-25 is made of a solid block pinned cassette and a few small cogs (made for juniors). There is your small machining difference. You need to put a small spacer, 0.5 mm befor the “standard” cassette, and you should be fine. Or it’s the other way around, I don’t remember been a long time since I tried the swap…

What does that have to do with splines not lining up?

Sorry I don’t have a pic because it put the old one back on. But when I lined them up on top of each other the splines were definitely a different pattern and the new cassette would not slip on the hub. Here is a pic of the packaging. https://postimg.cc/DJNJWpHv

I can’t figure out what I’m missing. Thanks again.

I can’t help you but I have experienced this with a very early 10 Speed Di2 cassette vs. what can be purchased now. The splines were different. That cassette would only mount on one Easton RC90 wheelset that came with the bike. I thought I was crazy for a while when I couldn’t move it to anything else so I took it to a trusted wrench and he verified the same thing; said he had never seen one like it.

Yes, there was a brief time that some Shimano 10 speed cassettes had their own unique splines. Any chance you’re using an Easton wheelset with a blue freehub?

Not likely. I have changes that cassette several times. This last one was purchased online from BikeINN out of Spain. Maybe they sent me one of those different versions. Since it’s such an odd gear ratio 14-25 it may have been sitting on the shelf for a while. Don’t know.

I have no idea what you mean by “not likely” when being asked a direct question.

There was a short time that Shimano made 10 speed cassettes that had deeper splines. They would fit on any 10 speed freehub body. However, some people made deeper splined freehub bodies to match those. Easton was the primary one that did that along with Shimano’s own 7800 hub. Thus, those 7800 hubs and Easton wheels with blue freehubs only fit certain 10 speed cassettes. If you have the 7800 hub, you’re kinda hosed. If you have the Easton wheels, you can buy a different freehub. Shimano realized their mistake and came out with a 7850 hub shortly after that went back to the ‘normal’ compatibility. If I remember right, the hub actually came before the cassette. They wanted taller splines to avoid the notches from a cassette after switching over to aluminum (lighter) freehub bodies.

Edit: See more at https://http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html#10.

Sorry, I guess I didn’t understand your question. As shown in the picture, the hub is red. So does that mean it’s not 7800 version? Thanks

Sorry, I 100% missed the post with the pictures since I thought I knew what the problem was from your first post. I didn’t realize they had a red colored freehub with the taller splines as well. It’s your freehub that’s the problem, not the cassette. It’s super easy to put a different freehub/cassette body on your current wheelset that can work with any 10 speed cassette you want. You could even put the 11 speed cassette body on there to open up going to 11 speed later on or boosting the resale value a little.

Here’s a freehub that will pop right on and you can use it with 10 speed Shimano or Sram cassette (with a 1.8 mm spacer behind the cassette closest to the spokes) or with an 11 speed Shimano or Sram cassette.

Dude, you hooked me up. And you saved me a lot of headaches trying to figure this one out. Much appreciated. Now on to youtube to figure out how to change it out. Thank you!

Super easy to do. Two 5 mm keys. When I had a pair of Eastons I would pull the cassette body on and off to use the disc cover instead of the actual cassette. 1 minute job tops.

Whoa, super easy. You rock! Thanks
I’d be lost without Slowtwitch.

That’s a very nice thing to say. Sorry you had to dig through several nonsense responses first.

Yeah mine was about cog L-R alignment.
My poor english understanding had me mix “splines” with “cogs”.
Still there is a little difference with cog alignment with the 14-25 6600 “pinned in one block” cassettes" and the 6700 “standard” ones though.
So when you finally put the 14-25 in, if the setup is not great, think about the 0.5 mm spacer

No worries. I haven’t used or set-up a 14-25 before so I would be coming to you for help with one of those.

So quick question. Instead of buying a new free body hub for $90, Is it possible to find a 10 speed 14-25 cassette to fit this hub? I could just return the one I bought in the picture and get the correct one.
