Wrench Help: Star Nut Busted

I just attempted to tighten my fork/headset up and it just wouldn’t tighten, it kept turning and then turned real easily. I took out the bolt and the cap and looked into the steerer and the star nut (I think thats what it is called) was all buckled in and pieces broken and jammed in there.

  1. Do I just bring this into my LBS and they will take care of it for me at a small charge? I noticed star nuts go for about $3.

  2. How tight should I tighten it in the future? I have a full vision set up that came with an 05 p3 sl and I have 4 spacers in there.

hope someone can help.

Speaking as an ex-wrench, I would just hammer the old one down further into the steerer tube, and install a new one. Your shop should be have a star nut setter and be able to do that very easily.

How tight, just as much is needed to get the play out of the headset, it shouldn’t be necc. to really reef on it at all. If it’s hard to get the play out, one possibility is another spacer is needed. But try the new star nut, sounds like that might solve it.
