Hi all, looking for some wrench help. I am completely redoing the housing and cables on my bike. When I detached everything, the right hand (rear brake, rear derailleur) lever (dura ace 7801 10 SPD) stays open like it is being forced open by a spring. The left hand side snaps shut. I showed it to a mechanic at a bike shop and he said he had never seen that before and had no advice. I showed it to a second mechanic, different shop, who said as long as it was shifting fine (it was) it should not be a problem as the cables will hold it shut. Is it designed to do this? If not is it fixable? It was working fine before I removed it. Thanks in advance for any help.

can you post a pic or pics?

Let me know if this does not work. Thanks for replying
Easy.
The return spring from your right shifter has (1) popped out in position, or (2) popped out and been lost, or (3) it broke. Not a hard repair. If it is condition no.1, you won’t even need a new part (but you will in condition 2 or 3). Any *competent *bike shop mechanic can fix this for you.

Thanks. Do you know how to access the spring? I pulled up the exploded view and can see where it is but can’t seem to get to it
I did a spring re-position on some 7801s a long time ago. You have to remove the pivot of the lever (pivot pin is locked in by a tiny allen screw), then the whole lever will pop out. Then you can see where the return spring should go. But you should have very high confidence in your mechanical skills to attempt this fix by yourself. Getting the various springs back in position requires very small needle-nose pliers and some force highly precisely applied.

Thanks for the help. Spring came out in two pieces. We’ll see if any one has one
Hello, Any luck finding the replacement spring as I have the same problem going on here. Let me know if you come up with a source as I can’t locate one…
Thanks, David
I called shimano directly and they said they had it in stock and to order it through a dealer. So should be here in a week or two. You’ll need the part number which you can get from the tech doc. Make sure you get the number for the right or left side as I think the springs are different
Cool deal. I took one out of a Ultegra shifter I had and the only difference is the spring is made from round stock and the Dura Ace one was made out of square stock. I even found the spring installation tool in my tool box. Funny how all the shops around here said the shifter was done as they didn’t have the spring nor could they get it. Total BS. Looks like I’ll have to call around to find a shop that is willing to order me some from Shimano to throw in my tool box…Good timing on this thread by the way as I read it last week and when I was cleaning my bike today I notice no spring tension. Good Luck with your repair!!
Cheers
Hello again…so I got the new spring today and put it in and it is forcing the brake lever open. I put the notch part in the little hole, slide the rest on and close up the shifter, put the pin back in and the spring is pushing the wrong direction. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong? Thanks
So I think I figured it out. There is a metal bar that I need to hook one end of the spring behind before placing the other notched end in the hole? Thanks again
I assume the spring is #6 in the exploded view above. I’m not sure how I would do this (or how I did it years ago) but I would study that exploded view and try to put in the spring as pictured. If not, there is always the LBS mechanic …
I asked at two different shops and no one has even attempted it! Thanks anyways. I’m thinking shimano installs the spring before installing some of the other parts but I’m still optimistic I can get it in. I may call them again for any tips. Thanks.
I am pretty sure that if you have the right tools, and maybe an extra set of hands (another person), you can do it. I did it, but I think I had someone hold the parts while I used 1 or 2 needlenose pliers to get everything in position.
And, IIRC, I am also recalling that pin #10 has to go in after the spring goes in (or sort of at the same time). And that pin will put the whole lever together.
The install tool from Shimano is just a small tube that slips onto the straight end of the tube to make it longer so it won’t slip while everything is lined up. Then push the pin back in and replace the set screw. I think even without the tube it should go together. Make sure the spring is wound the same as the one you took out as there is left and right…then pull the tool off and you should be good to go. Let my know if you need any help…
Hi there, it didn’t come with the install tube. Do you think it is absolutely necessary? I’m willing to order it, just means two more weeks…
Slip the red spray tube from wd-40 or a Bic pen inside on it or some small tube get creative. It helps to line it up, but I did it without after I saw how it worked. Look at the left shifter so you see how the straight part of the spring rest in the ramp of the shifter part. With the bent part on top pointing up my spring winds counter clock wise…I’m heading out tonight, but will check with in the morning. You got it…
