Whats the highest HR during olympic 400m ?!
From Men’s Journal Oct 2000, based on an nbcolympics.com study:
“In the 400-meter final at this year’s trial, Johnson finished at 43.68, the fastest time in the world this year. While he blurred to victory, his pulse made a stately climb from 141 beats per minute at 50 meters to 177 at the finish line. His bpms were higher in slower preliminary rounds than in the final. In an earlier 400 race, his heart rate dropped during the race.”
The race is too short to hit max HR…that’s more what the 1500M guys do.

i dunno…the highest HR i’ve ever seen came at the end of a one-minute all-out interval on the bike. 400m may be a bit too short in most cases, but i bet 800 guys max out for sure. 177 could have been close to johnson’s max.
I knew an athlete that had a 238 in a triathlon 10k run.
Questions about how high a HR is are like asking what did they have for breakfast. Means nothing except to the individual, and how it relates to their own max…

They can’t max in 400M because they are starting from rest. They have warmed up, but have spent several minutes standing around prior to the gun.
It depends on the size of one’s heart. If one’s heart, especially the right ventricle is large, it supplies a large stroke volume with each heart beat and doesn’t need to beat as fast as someone with a smaller heart which requires a higher heart rate to supply the same volume of oxygen.
It was probably higher than 177 after the finish. Not a lot, but a few beats.
To the poster who mentioned the 238 in a tri, that happens to me once in a while - it’s an arrythmia. I doubt your friend ran very far with his HR at that level. It feels like you’ve been kicked in the stomach by a horse.

true. good point.
I can try to ask David Verburg, he trains with us.
