Deano Day was the guy who really brought country music to Detroit’s airwaves and made it mainstream in the 80’s. He died Friday of kidney complications secondary to heart failure. He was on a waiting list for a heart transplant and didn’t make it.

Mark “the bird” Fidrych died this afternoon under his pickup truck. He was a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. He won the rookie of the year in 1976 and started in the all-star game that same year. He was known forr odd antics on the pitcher’s mound, like talking to the ball.

I was a kid when these guys were making names for themselves, but I remember them. I guess time marches on.

Day, I really never listened to. But Fidrych biting the big one is a real shock.

Bernie - I am just sub 50 yrs old and vividly remember both

Fidrych scares me big time for some reason - maybe because he was so whacked he seemed ageless. I won’t even ask about “under” the pick up truck - there is a story there I am not ready to deal with.

The more we age - the scary it gets.

I know what you mean.

Wow that sucks. He actually signed a baseball of mine when I was a kid at Tiger Stadium. My son has it in his room right now.

I was at the game where it was announced Fidyrch was voted/selected onto the All-Star team. It was a “special” moment as was the Bird’s short tenure as a Tiger. He seemed like a genuinely good person.

One of the problems with getting old is seeing you idols die off. I can’t imagine a world without Howe, Kaline, Kell or Harwell.

I caddied for The Bird during the baseball strike. He seemed like a very nice guy.

He happened to live just off the 2nd hole at Oakland Hills, and you could see him mowing the lawn every once in a while. Pretty neat.

First he was a licensed truck driver. One report said Mack Truck, another said it was a Dump Truck another mentioned a jack failing.

One local news report showed a picture of a full sized dump truck at what looked like a farm.

Yes, that was his farm on the east coast.
