Worlds Toughest Duathlon?

It may not be the world’s toughest but it is sure to be a classic. Former National Duathlon Champion Brad Kearns who directs the Worlds Toughest Half Ironman in Auburn CA has agreed to offer a long course duathlon option at his 2007 race in May. We are now in the process of securing slots for Team USA for the 2007 Long Course Duathlon Worlds so that west coasters will have another option for qualifying. The race will consist of a 5km run, then onto the half IM course with a 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.
This should be an epic race. Anyone who has done one of Brad’s race can attest to how well they are put on and how brutal the courses are. I just hope I can get my running together in time to be competitive at this race because I don’t want to miss this instant classic.

Can Canadians come to play?

I hope so since technically speaking I am still a Canadian. Simon did the half this year as his first long course race.

Ouch, that is going to be one tough Du…count me in. I believe the race in 2005 was an unplanned Du because of the weather.

Also of note (from the website) is that there will be a new Olympic distance tri on the same day as the half ironman. I guess the Olympic is replacing the old Sprint distance, since the Sprint is not mentioned on the site.

The Olympic sounds like a great alternative to Wildflower.

Thanks, Mike (and Brad) for making this happen. Best of luck!

No way dude, Tetsuoni is trying to keep the Powerman NC spots in the East at Devil’s Kitchen Du.

well if PM-NC does not happen, there are still 6 slots left to be assigned to races, 3 could go to DKD and 3 out west which is a very likely scenario. Keep in mind there are 18 slots total to be had per age group.
So it could look like this:

Striders Duathlon in Texas, 3 slots
DKD in NY, 3 slots
WTD in CA, 3 slots
Blackwater Traverse, 3 slots
PM-OH (Nationals LC Championships), 6 slots

Sounds like a fun race, the kind of event where you can have a really good suffer

I know the trails down at Rattlesnake Bar really well, so I am sure it will be nice 5km down there. The bike and half marathon I assume will be the same as last years half IM. If I get too lazy to swim - then count me in for the Du.

Cheers, Paul

What do you mean by “if Powerman NC does not happen”?

<< What do you mean by “if Powerman NC does not happen”?

as of right now from what I have heard is that the race isn’t going to happen in 2007.

From the Team Magic website:
**Please note that the Powerman North Carolina Duathlon and Miniman Duathlon ** are no longer under the management of Team Magic, Inc. Set-Up, Inc. is currently evaluating the continuation of these events for 2007. Updates will be posted here and emailed to our database as decisions are made. Team Magic did enjoy working with Set-Up, Inc in 2005 and 2006 to get this event off the ground and we hope you will continue to support the race if they can get things worked out to keep the event. The Set-Up Inc website hasn’t been updated from the 2006 race info.

I was under the impression that Powerman Alabama was a qualifier as well? Is this true?

Powerman Alabama is a qualifier for short course Worlds in Hungary in May.
The list of qualifiers for each WC is here: http://www.usatriathlon.org/Events/TeamUSAQualifyingEvents.aspx
the listing for LC Duathlon Worlds is incomplete right now and will be completed once all of the paperwork is completed for two more qualifiers.

Great thanks for the link. Powerman AL and OH are the same distance though right? Why is one a qualifier for short course and one for long course? Sorry for the ignorance…decided to switch to mainly DU because of my poor swim times…always have to play catch up on the bike.

they are close, both events have an 8km run to start and finish but Ohio has a 36 mile bike and Alabama has a 33 mile bike, minor diffference. Alabama could have been a qualifier for LC but they declined from what I understand.

One other question are there any good training programs or coaches out there for the 8k/53k/8k format?

ummm, is that a trick question? Read my signature line

Haha…no I just wasn’t sure if you did duathletes. I checked out your website and did not know if you only specialized in triathletes. I will send you a PM.

Guess I’d better actually get back on the bike if I want to qualify! Motivation is hard to come by at the moment…but I’m getting there…

PM OH is a great place for LC Nats! Really tough course…especially the run…better find some hills if you’re going to run that one!

Thanks, guys…I think the motivation is coming back!
