WR just set today for M 70+ , 17:46 ….. does this make you want to quit running or continue to hope for improvement? I looked this guy up he also has half marathon WR with 1:20. He only started running at 50 years old!
Definitely NOT the first part — I’m a Lifer, as they say
My personal view is that if I can maintain my pace - as I have been for the past decade or so - and continue to defeat the Downhill, that’s improvement
YMMV
Also this time illustates the problem with AG of 5 years. 60-64 and 65-69 had no one faster than this time either. Perhaps he should roll down to take those AG podium spots also?
How many athletes, total, were 60+? At a certain point, the AG goes from hundreds to dozens to “do we even have a whole podium? Or is it just you two?”
If I’m one of 'em, that’s cool LOL
Ok I was, wrong there was a 65 year old who did 17:25.
58 participants in 70-74
100 in 65-69
123 in 60-64
This is a pretty big race with people traveling from afar to do it.

That’s faster than my best 3 mile time back in my 20s!
Interesting, you were able to run 18min 5ks but your post here history makes you come off as a newbie runner. Not being offensive, but maybe in running we have at best 20 years before severe degradation? (10,000 hour rule also). I’d like to find cases of people undoing that. If anything i think it has to do with over doing long distance efforts
Never ran an 18 minute 5k. Best I ever did was 19 flat in 3 miles for my PFT. But that was 30 years ago. And that was max effort.
I ran for a few years after I got out but that fell off like so much other stuff. I probably went close to 20 years before I started getting back into fitness. Even then, I just started out small with a 5k here and there. I only started triathlon about five years ago.
As I’ve said in other threads, I’m a MOP athlete in the swim and the bike (3rd quarter to be a little more accurate) but I lose any advantage in the run.
And what makes it harder for me in the long events is the damage resulting from throat cancer and treatment. It’s not such a big deal on the short courses where I may only need a little Gatorade but on longer courses where nutrition and hydration are a huge factor it can have a deciding impact.
problem i see in triathlon and running in general people jump to long distance in general without working the 5k, which means working the mile. when peaking in short distance move up to long. one long goal is hit start back in the short stuff.
