World triathlon championship series cagliari

Saw some discussions about WTCS races getting lost in the other thread so starting one here for Cagliari… anyone in??

Shame there’s no Sophie Coldwell racing in cag, a third straight podium wouldve been very interesting for the title race.
The first Yee vs Wilde of 2023 is going to be a watch… plus a dozen other men’s medal contenders - and Mola is back!?

Raceday is Saturday 27th of May

Women start 11:00 CEST
Men start 15:15 CEST
.

cheers… and some start lists to get the ball rolling too

Yee → Wilde → Pearson → Messias → Geens → Mola → Vilaca → Brownlee → Blummenfelt - that 10k should be 🔥

This is the last race of the first Olympic points cycle. This race is very important to Pearson. A top 8 finish and the us is likely to get 3 men into the Olympics. Another 30 place showing and they are in serious trouble.

Cagliari will be first race of the second Olympic Qualification period! Pearson was looking good til he cramped up in Yoko

Well that’s bad news.

Am I off by a week?

It’s actually the first race of the second block, the first period ends on May 26th, Points May 27 2023 and May 27, 2024 count in the second block. So while it’s definitely important for earning quota spots, the first block ship has already sailed…

In terms of the start lists, It’s unsurprising to see a few people skipping events in the first part of this season, given that many countries have heavily emphasized the Paris test event in their qualification process, from an individual perspective many athletes are trying to peak then. Of course, federations trying to get a 3rd quota spot, are also pushing their athletes to race a score often, to secure the spot, but in doing so, that could hurt people’s chance of occupying the place that they earned (look at Tom Bishop for Tokyo, he was racing his ass off to try to grab a 3rd slot for the British men, that would have 99% ended up going to Ali Brownlee…). It’s too bad that Flora is out, and Sophie is taking a well earned rest, but will be a good to see the others who are knocking on the door… I’m most interested to see how Beth Potter goes on the ladies side, since it’s not necessarily what I would call a Beth Potter course…

For the US, it looks like there’s a slightly better shot of Gwen getting as start. Erika Ackerlund is off the start list, so Katie Zaferes is in, so any other US scratches, she’s in, or depending on what happens with the waitlist in terms of NF quotas, she has a shot.

Well that’s bad news.

Am I off by a week?

by a day

Am I off by a week? What day is it today, where you are?
Zaferes on the start list: second oldest!

Potter, Spivey, Knibb, Beaugrand, Kingma, GTB, Lombardi, Periault, Vidal, Meißner = top 10.

Correction, Ackerlund is there, so it looks like the waitlist isn’t too full, because they are allocating spots above NF quotas, which likely means Gwen is one or two scratches away from a start…

yes thats why the waiting list was so long for yoko and so short for cagliari

Gwen was 4 and Katie 3 on waitlist so Gwen is top of the wait list now
.

Where are you guys seeing the wait lists for this race? And what day and time will it be live in California?

Really loved last weeks race timing, got to watch it at a reasonable hour on friday nite here. Very impressed with the US ladies too, they are all showing up with their A games on, and Erika is really closing that gap to top 10. And funny how the womens have taken the old mens dynamic of making those small swim breaks stick on the bike. That group is quite lucky that Knibb, Kingma, and Spivey are there to drive the pace. GTB needs to find about 10+ more seconds in that swim or she is going to be relegated to Mola/Murray type chases that usually dont end up on the podium…

California is 9 hours behind CEST (90% of Europe, including Italy), so 11:00 and 15:15 CEST on Saturday means 2 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. Pacific on Saturday.

What a great race it’s going to be. Thanks to Rodger for initiating the thread. I’ll be with my mates doing some trekking in the low mountains, including the guy who is responsible for my triathlon addiction, so perfect circumstances to watch the replays in the evening.

Will be rooting for Zaferes because of a bunch of reasons, least of which is that I have a photo with her, and for Klamer. I’m also a big fan of Knibb’s post race interviews (in fact all kinds of interviews), definitely want to see her on the podium.

And… Richard Murray among the guys, though he’s as much of a long shot as his wife. (He would be super happy with 8th place, which he needs to make the Dutch Olympic qualification). Also: the best puker in the field, Marten van Riel, as well as his spewmate Kenji Niner.

My picks for the race are of course a completely different matter.

Blummenfelt’s Tokyo spewformance is still the gold for me, Van Riel in silver…

Really interested to see how Mola fits in with this start list - he did just win duathlon worlds.

What was worse about Bishop’s situation was how many people on this board were all about Bishop racing himself into a hole so Brownlee could have the slot. Which is ridiculous and makes me dislike Brownlee even more. If Someone earns the slot, it is theirs.

You do realize that Bishop was supported by British Triathlon at the time,?
In part that means you have to earn your keep.
Also, keep in mind that if he had secured that spot, Alistair was injured , so it would have most likely been Bishop going to the Olympics.
Do things are not quite as black and white as you would like to paint them
Just saying

This is all correct and provides important context.

Some more important context would be that Ali Brownlee himself squandered Britain’s chances for a third men’s slot when he got disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior in WTCS Leeds.

But we digress…

It’s very black and white, Alistair didn’t earn the spot and should not have been his. Erstwhile Bishop raced himself into oblivion and got sick and injured in the process in hopes of securing that slot for his country. Reward the person doing the work. Alistair would not have been there on merit but on past laurels.
