Workouts on Garmin Edge with kickr core

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help me out with my first world training problems. I used to do my structured indoor workouts on my Kurt kinetic trainer run off of a Garmin Edge. I switched up to a kickr core and still want to use my edge. My setup is a kickr core paired as a trainer to the edge 830 and using my power pedals as the source of truth for actual wattage. I like doing the z2 workouts in erg mode, but want to do the intervals in resistance or free ride. For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to run a structured workout on the edge in free ride or resistance mode. When each new interval starts inside the workout, the garmin automatically switches back to erg mode. Does anyone have a way around this short of unpairing the trainer each time I encounter a workout like this? Thanks for your help!

I searched the Garmin connect forums and found multiple threads asking how to do the same thing and unfortunately none of them had a solution.

Submit the idea to Garmin? (Option to disable erg mode during structured workout?)

Thanks. I searched Garmin also and came up empty. I was hoping for someone finding out a super sneaky way of getting it done.

I use an Edge 520 Plus with a Kickr Core and 4iiii power meter for my structured workouts. My kickr is paired as a smart trainer. I use the indoor profile and select the Do Workout option when it is programmed for that day (alternatively you can select the workouts from the Training section). With a structured workout the kickr will be in ERG mode and control the resistance. Assuming that your head unit has also detected your power meter, the head unit will use that as the power source and not the kickr. You will note this during the workout in the way that the power fluctuates (not by any significant margin).

Non structured rides - not too dissimilar to above. Ensure the smart trainer is paired along with your power meter. Use the Indoor profile. The kickr will go into trainer mode so that you will have to use your gears to get the desired wattage, HR, etc. Otherwise create a workout in Garmin Connect with a HR range and do that as a workout.

Hope that helps.

Had one other idea, but haven’t tried it yet. If you are doing a workout with the Edge controlling the trainer in ERG mode, can you turn off/disconnect the trainer pairing from the sensor pairing screen in order to “free ride” and then turn the trainer connection back on forcing it back to erg mode for intervals at the prescribed wattage from the Edge, without losing place in the workout?

Edit: oops, reading OP above, the ask was not to have free-ride non-erg intervals during a structured workout, it was to have a free-ride workout which still showed interval power instructions without affecting trainer resistance.
