Working out with chewing gum

Recently I have been doing a lot of my workouts (except swimming!!) whilst chewing gum. I don’t know why, but I am getting to like it, especially for the indoor stuff. I find it quite therapeutic. Anyone else do this? A bit of an irrelevant post but I thought I would ask.

sometimes I do - it’s nice to chew every once-in-a-while, but I typically find myself stuffing it in the corner of my mouth and forgetting about it - until I almost choke.

On occasion, in college, a few of us would throw a dip in while swimming - I know, that’s totally disgusting…

I do it all of the time. Be careful tho…it can mask dehydration.

I actually like it every once in a while riding…However back when I was coaching ski racers we had a problem with kids coming to training with gum in their mouth and in a few cases with dip in. Aside from dip being forbidden, chewing gum and dipping is quite dangerous while skiing. We had a case of a kid choking on a wad of gum after crashing in a training run. While the kid ended up being okay having to perform the Heimlich because he was to stupid to spit his gum out was infuriating! This ranked right up their with the epidemic we had of kids training with the strap of their helmet undone because it was “cool.”

I used to play all my soccer games chewing gum, never swallowed it, bit my tonge a couple of times, not pretty. I still do but before it was more of a pre-game ritual. I bike a lot chewing gum.

My mother-in-law goes trough a 10 pack a day. She has no idea of how annoying it is to others.

I always think of this when I see gum-chewers:

Cows chewing their cud.
or
Jimi Hendrix phoning it in.

Wow, I feel better now !

The only time I have anything to do with chewing gum is when I’m scraping it off the bottom of my shoes.

It’s evil, vile, stuff. Why would you want to chew something that had no nutritional value? And, while I’m ranting here, why can’t gum chewers throw it out when they’re done with it? (How do they know when they’re done, anyway?)

I’m not sure what flavor you chew but I remember reading a ‘report’ or ‘study’ a while back that said spearmint/peppermint flavored gum or candy heightens the senses enough where it could possibly improve physical performance. Sounds crazy but who knows?

I think it is a nice trick that turns the mind off and allows you to detach a bit from the task at hand. I used to stash a piece on my bike for races and it helped. Plus reading Chuckie V’s report about chewing sugarless gum helps cleanse teeth from all the sugar we ingest, it may be a great idea. Assuming that info. is factual. Gotta look into it more.

Wow, I like the sound of that. My favorite is peppermint “Wrigleys EXTRA: cool breeze”. Come to think of it, didn’t Michael “Air” Jordan always chew gum??
Is it only a matter of time before we get “Ironman chewing Gum”?!

I think you’re on to something! You better get on the phone with the Ironman marketing people…pronto!

Actually I think Gatorade made a gum back in the late 1980s that was marketed towards athletes. I even liked it. Maybe the MDOT folks will bring it back to maeke even more money. Tim

sugarless gum can help your teeth, because it makes you salivate.

I do it when I run, bike and swim…Jolt gum is the snizz mizz…

I did a HIM with the same piece of gum for the whole race, swim and all.

For me I find chewing gum to keep my mouth from feeling too dry/gross in a long race and the taste, for a while, is better than gells!

Oh, you mean chewing gum WHILE you work out, I thought it was some sort progressive resistance thing, nevermind.
