I’m cheap, and bought some terramar stuff at sierratradingpost.com for cheap. The crew neck stretched a bit, bit who cares- it’s a base layer and was cheap. Zip-neck a little better. My sister bought me a Smartwool zipneck for a birthday a few years back. It’s very nice, thick, wears well and is softer than the Terramar. It is a good bit more costly, though
Double ditto. Lasts forever, and holds up EXTREMELY well. Their base muscle shirt with the wind-blocker front is awesome. Their wool socks are great also—gets me an xtra 10 degrees before I have to put on the booties/toe covers.
icebreaker is pricey, but worth every penny (of the discounted prices i’ve picked mine up for on ebay). the hand is like silk, and they’ll stand up to abuse.
don’t know how they knit it, but i have a small hole (maybe 1/8") in the palm of one of my icebreaker longsleeves with thumb holes that hasn’t gotten any bigger after repeated wearings & washings. the hole itself was the result of a kitty being over-enthusiastic with claws, not due to wear & tear.
i like smartwool’s socks, but their apparel is a little scratchier than icebreaker.
um… my secret source for ULTRA cheap 100% lightweight merino wool “jerseys”… wait for it… wait for it… the salvation army! got myself some great sweaters from there this winter that work great as base layers! ~$1.50 each… i’m just sayin’, i have a $150 wool jersey that functions no better than the $1.50 version from the salvo!
I second the ‘thumbs up’ vote for Icebreaker. I splurged on two shirts and I love them. They are so thin and soft but also so warm and dry. It is a worthwhile investment.
