There was a video posted a while back showing the lead woman in a marathon having it virtually locked-up with 1/4-mile to go. But, instead of running for the tape, she starts high-5ing the crowd and an African woman turns on the jets to pass her before she even realized what was going on.
From memory, the woman that got passed was a marathon rookie, and the eventual winner was very tactical about the pass - going way over to the middle of the course to blend in with some men that were finishing at the same time.
Anyone know what I’m talking about, and have a link to the video?
Check this past weekend’s USATF Cross Country National Championships - Molly Huddle thought she had it won and starts to celebrate before the line, but Sara Hall keeps charging through to beat her right at the tape in a photo finish.
In fairness, I’m not sure the leader could have held off that rocket finish by the eventual winner. It looked like she had a couple seconds by the end. I’m sure she wishes she knew for sure though.
In her post race interviews second place said she thought someone from the crowd would have told her instead of saying “you’re going to win” or something like that.
I’ll bet after this race finishes are a lot more business like. At some point she will be bagged on for being aloof and not greeting the fans as she finishes.
Second placed Erik Zabel (T-Mobile) said simply, “I thought I had won,” acknowledging his error in raising his arms prematurely as Oscar Freire pipped him for victory at San Remo.
that’s a good one toolish, thanks. i like how densham has a “wtf?!” moment, then a smile as it sinks in that she blew it. no feeling sorry for herself there, a top champion obviously.
gotta add i thought brighton uk initially and how the hell can they feel their feet/hands etc, after swimming in the english channel in jan!
