Has anyone here ever done a “winter triathlon”? Would you be willing to share your experience?
A winter triathlon is a race with cross country skiing, mountain biking on snow and trail running on snow. I know they exist and would like to try one.
What kind of gear do you need? What bike, what tyres?
I live in Alaska. The winter triathlon national championship is here. I highly recommend the race. The gear I used is a fat bike for the bike. I used classic cross country skis but the faster choice would be skate skis, and ran with Snow-Cross shoes that Salomon makes. You could do run in any shoes though probably. It is a fun event - if you want to come do the one in Alaska in January, it is easy to just rent a fat bike and skis. Race site is close to the Anchorage Airport. If you want to watch winter tris to see what they are about there are videos of past world championships on Triathlonlive.tv.
I’m finally thinking of giving winter triathlon a try.
If I get a 29er hardtail is that a good solution? Would a 1x12 gearing be a good idea?
I saw a good discount on a Scott scale. Canyon also an option.
Are 2.4 tyres enough?
It’s not the first time I’ll be doing MTB but I don’t have one atm so I hope to also be using it beyond winter triathlon for general off-road/cross country, possibly a cross triathlon. I don’t want to spend a huge amount of money and take advantage of the discounts available in this period.
I did cycle with a fat ebike on snow a few times in the past and thought it was fun though it was awful in compact snow but pretty awful on the occasional ice.
