I tested some stuff I have readily available a couple of months ago and just put together this little video.
Some notes:
I had been rider-on testing various things for roughly 1hr before this brief session. So I was pretty tired.
Even with my position outlined on the floor in front of me (using the video projection), I still had trouble in some of the latter runs (you can see, visually, the shoe cover test is different than the no shoe cover test).
The values reported are in meters squared at zero and ten degrees of yaw.
In case it isn’t clear in the video, the items being tested are:
Blue Seventy TX2000 2 pc
Blue Seventy TX3000 1pc back zip
Fusion Speed top + TX3000
Castelli T1 Stealth + TX3000 (production version, not Kona version)
Pearl Izumi Tri Octane
Castelli Body Paint 3 Skinsuit
Castelli BP3 + Castelli Nano shoe covers
All of that was with a Giro Advantage 2 (heretofore my fastest helmet option)
The reported cda values are in meters squared. Using a very slightly different position (1cm more reach, 7.5mm more armpad stack) with the BP3 skinsuit + shoe covers + Giro A2 gave a calculated cda value of .194 at a 10mi TT on Wednesday night. (this was missing a PB by ~4 seconds).
Here is the VIDEO
and yes, I know the song continues on past the video. I just wanted to give everyone the pleasure of listening to a classic. Or I just forgot to crop…
If you look at my position you will see that my head position changed between those two runs. So I expect that my result at 0 is somewhat nullified by that when reporting a higher cda value.
You tested with the visor with the P09? (And the plug or no?)
Hasnt testing done by others shown that without the visor is the fastest option? Did you test without it?
I did not test w/o the visor. If a helmet comes with a visor I generally am going to wear it. I dislike wearing glasses during the bike and would vastly prefer the visor option. I cannot remember if the helmet was plugged/taped actually. My guess is that no it was not.
It was pretty fast Wed night. I was hoping for 7-10 more watts but I just didn’t have it. Had you tested at A2 the day before the TT last month? Two guys from VA did that this time around, one guy being the 19:32 (which is the fastest CMS TT in the 3 years or so I’ve been doing it).
But you use the A2 which doesn’t? Because it tests
fastest. Why wouldn’t you try the P09 without if it might potentially test faster?
I did the day of testing in AM and 85miles the day before, so not well rested in the least for Lowes. I was hoping for 20 more watts, but hope springs eternal. need to start doing some intervals to work on that, but winter was so long this year, I haven’t gotten around to it until this week.
the p09 is a goofy helmet, like selector, one size too small, next size too big.
not sure I care for the lowes TT too much either(though it is fast), as you have to dodge so many folks, and ride fairly far to the right to get around folks riding 10’ off from the stripe when they are not passing anyone.
