Williams System 30 vs Shimano WH-R500

I asked last week whether or not it is worth it to move up to non-aero wheels. The answer was a resounding no.

Since then I have found these ‘semi-aero’ wheel by Williams that would be in my price range.

Are they worth the upgrade? or still no? Shimano link is below.

Not really. Willams System 38 would be where you would start to see any real benefits but considering the other “System” series wheels all cost the same the deeper the better.

Feel like donating $500 to the “Make a crappy rider somewhat less crappy fund”? We also take donations in smaller sums.

If you have a $500ish budget look at a used front (404, HED, SRAM 60 or 80 etc…) and buy a Wheelbuilder Aerojacket for the rear wheel. Cheapest and best combo overall. You should be able to get a set up like that for $500-600 depending what you get for the front.

Ignorance…

Can you put an Aerojacket on something like a WH-R500?

Nevermind, the WH-R500 is on the list of incompatible wheels.

Ive looked at almost every brand of Shimano wheel made this year if i was going to buy one i would be looking at Ultegra side or the RS20 or RS30 wheels. they arent the lightest but have bladed spokes and are mid ranged training wheels. Ultegra and the RS80 and Dura-ace Carbons are the higher ends of shimano.

If i had 500 i’d be looking at Shimano Ultegras or the Williams and not touch the shiamnos listed above, almost all of these are heavy and they are without skewers or tires.

I am personally looking at the RS30’s because i dont have 500 to spend on a wheelset right now. You can find them on ebay under 200 everyday.
