Will Rouvy work with my Computrainer?

I’ve been Zwifting all spring and summer and find it’s such a great workout and has served me well. I don’t plan on getting rid of it. It’s not perfect but it’s a great tool for me since it’s dangerous to ride on the paved roads where I live.

I just learned a course that I’m signed up for in 2022 is on Rouvy. I want to try it. But I can’t seem to find out if it’s compatible with Computrainer which is now obsolete (out of business). I’ll buy an updated smart trainer when my Computrainer dies eventually, but for now it’s works fine. Some Apps do not work with Computrainer so I am asking if anyone knows this before I sign up.

I do appreciate this Rouvy thread I just read through:

I can’t see why Rouvy would not work if you have Zwift working. Both are applications in the cloud controlling your load unit reacting to a course profile, and your speed and weight. It should work. I really enjoy the Rouvy courses. There are few that are close to home that I do in real life, and sometimes, I am time limited and go and TT the same course on Rouvy after a 10 min warmup run rather than 50 min bike commute. If I want to TT those courses that I like in real life, the entire process takes me 3 hrs and on Rouvy I can get it all done in sub 90 min including the warmup. My best time on one of my in life courses was 1:21 this year and Rouvy on very similar effort was 1:15.xx. I was trying to do this TT 1x per week.

This does not answer your actual question, but just wanted to let you know that the courses feel much like the real word. I think Rouvy gives me more credit for my aero position than in real life thus a higher speed on the flats and downhills (or Rouvy assumes I am riding with race wheels, fast rubber and aero helmet and a skinsuit, whereas in training I am on standard wheels, slow fat rubber at 60 psi, standard helmet, regular jersey and shorts). I don’t think even with all the race kit I close the 6 min gap…maybe 2.5 min max. So don’t get too excited if you post faster times on rouvy than real life.

Yeah hoping it should work on the Computrainer. I’ll probably try some courses that I’ve raced on in the past to see how comparable it is to real life. There are a lot of variables when riding outside, so I’m not sure how an App could capture everything. But it would be fun to have some sort of an idea. It will also be nice to have something else instead of Zwift for the long winter ahead of me. I’ll probably ride both.

Cool to learn about your experiences with Rouvy!

I tried a couple years ago and Rouvy wouldn’t work with my computrainer. From what I remember it never found it as a power source.

I’ve since replaced my trainer.

I didn’t upgrade just to use Rouvy but I really like Rouvy.

Ugh, that is what I was concerned about…I wonder if anyone figured out a work-around to this. But mostly likely not I bet.

I’m lucky that Zwift still works with Computrainer. Another pain is that when I’m done on Zwift, I get an upload from my Garmin into Training Peaks giving me HR data and then Zwift uploads a separate entry with all my watt/speed data.

If anyone can give me more reasons to buy a new smart trainer, I’m open. I don’t think Computrainer works with Trainer Road anymore either. I don’t like to replace things until absolutely necessary, but maybe I should in this case.

I have a 25+ year old Computrainer that still works like a champ. It is probably nearing 1,000,000 miles. Because it has been so dependable, I am reluctant to replace it. I still use it with TrainerRoad but need to use the “legacy” app from TR. As a result, I cannot access new features like group rides.

if Rouvy works via Ant+ then if you have the app from PerfPRO CT Smart it will work. since Rouvy says it communicates via Ant+. So the app works well for me but I have not tried Rouvy but Xert or Trainer road works fine.

I asked my husband to check out the Ant+ and the app. He is the tech savvy person, not me! I hope that will work. Thanks!

I was a road bike racer in the 1990s and friends had a computrainer. Back then we didn’t have the money for one. I remember they were expensive back then. We finally purchased brand new computrainers in 2013 or 14. They still work great. I use the ERG mode and adjust the watts. But with Zwift recently it’s been great using the computrainer/zwift. Now if I can add Rouvy, that will be ideal to ride different race courses! And just mix things up a bit!

Rouvy does work with PerfPro CT Smart and the Computrainer. Set ups is simple and even simpler to use after that. You may need to buy a Ant USB dongle, I am reasonably sure PerfPro explains all that well. I have been using this set up for two years.

Thank you! That is great news!

Hope you can get that working with too much hassle!
I use Zwift right now with a Tacx Bushido. It connects and works ok but the power numbers are waaay off. I’m looking to use my old reliable C Trainer to connect to Zwift. I’m hoping that it does a better job.

The power/watts I see on Zwift seems pretty reasonable to what I see when I use the ERG mode on the Computrainer. I do make sure I calibrate and adjust to make sure it’s accurate as possible.

I’ll try to report back soon when I get situated on Rouvy but probably won’t be for another week or two.
