Can he break the world record for fastest ironman ever in Roth this weekend?

Strictly speaking No as it’s not a WTC event, ergo not “an Ironman”.
That would be pretty cool. But hasn’t he won two half IMs in the past two weekends? Seems like a lot of racing leading up to a record attempt.

I don’t know, I hope so, but I hope he wins Hawaii even more. He has removed an IM from his schedule this year which is probably smart.
I like how he is laying it all out on the line. Training at altitude in Boulder, really pushing his run speed, etc. He is making no secret as to what his plans/goals are and I like and respect that.
There’s no such thing as a world record in our sport, because we do not certify any of our courses…Last week it was Natasha breaking the 70.3, with an obviously short swim. He can break the course record, and that’s if the course hasen’t changed, becuase the course has been different in the past. My guess is that it is not even the same course that it was when all those guys went 7:50+… I measured the bike in the old days there, and it was about 107 to 109 miles…Our sport just doesn’t lend itself to timed world records as it stands right now…
notice that the question asks ironman, not Ironman. I don’t believe there is a property right to ironman, just as there doesn’t seem to be one for Iron Man (and arguably a diluted one for “Ironman”). but that is a different topic altogether.
Then you should have stated Iron distance as that is the accepted phraseology. Either way he could make a course record or a distance record although there have been questions about the accuracy of the Roth course in the past when it was an Ironman. There most certainly is a property right to Ironman as it is a registered trademark, no dilution involved.
“accepted” by whom? The British?
Very funny, new boy.
Nope…b/c he won’t be able to draft Faris.
“accepted” by whom? The British?
Ha, you asked for that one Julian =]
What kind of cash bonus does he get if he breaks the “record?”

Australia’s Chris McCormack, a three-time champion at the Quelle Challenge Roth, will be chasing more than a fourth title when he returns to the Quelle Challenge Roth in June. He will be working to break the world record of 7:50:27—set over this course by Luc van Lierde in 1997—and win a US$100,000 bonus on offer to the athlete who can break the record…McCormack has never been shy about wanting to set a new world’s best mark in Roth, often saying he believes as an athlete it’s his duty to strive to go better than his predecessors. “I for one am very excited about the prospect of going for a huge time, and the 100k makes this as much an economical decision as it is emotional. This is just what the sport needs to see us evolve and again it is Roth that continues to push in this direction. It is just incredible and I look forward to the challenge—$100 000 would look great in anybody’s bank account. It is very exciting."
The women will also be chasing a record that has long stood in Roth: Paula Newby-Fraser’s world’s best time of 8:50:53 set in 1994…“Ten years after Luc van Lierde made history here in Roth, we’re thrilled to see Macca and the rest of our fantastic athletes attempt to lower that record,” said race director Felix Walchshöfer. “It would be a great new chapter in the history of our race.” As it always has been, the course’s accuracy has been verified by the insurance company that provides coverage for the race. The distances have been ,measured and verified and the insurance company will insure the money on offer. he said. Roth, the former Ironman Europe, celebrated its fifth anniversary as an independent race with its July running and a field of 2,700 individual athletes and 1,700 relay teams. Race day will be Sunday, June 24, 2007. To learn more, visit the race website at www.challenge-roth.com.

If the conditions are favorable, I bet he does it with that kind of money up for grabs.
does anyone know what kind of splits are required to break the record? specifically for macca what kind of marathon does he have to run (2:45??)
2:36 is what it took Luc to establish the record…
Van Lierde’s splits: (0:49, 4:28, 2:36)
.
Don’t forget Macca’s the best runner in the world.
Ever.
While Macca is capable, the question is how can he? When LVL did 7:50, three others, Zack, Leder and Hellregiel were also sub-eight. I am not sure that anyone else in this years field is fast enough to push Macca that fast. If he goes sub-eight again he will be so far front of everyone else right from the start. Is he strong enough to push himself that hard, and alone for seven and a half plus hours?
I am not doubting he is capable, I just don’t think that he will go that fast without others pushing him.
