Will Coach Gordo ever want try to win at Kona?

I’ve been following Gordo’s blog for a long time now. He has this focus on IM Canada which is unreal, probably why he is one of the most important people in triathlon today, I guess. It would be awesome to see him burn it up in Kona when he wins IM Canada, but it doesn’t sound like that is part of his overall plan. I personally would love to see him do Kona two months later and win it all.

yeah and when he wins both while dragging the tire all 140.6 that will be AWESOME!!!

you were looking for sarcastic responses right???

I’d guess not. He can see himself better than his fans.
.

Ironman Canada is a race he can win, Ironman Hawaii is a race he can’t win and he knows this. The rest is a fish size/pond size decision.

That’s what I find so great about the guy. He plainly says that dragging that tire probably gave him no physical benefit, but mentally he knows he did something others would never do. It’s an apt analogy for Kona. He’s not a dumb person, so he must know that winning Kona in Ironman is everything (look at the debate a while back about Macca and Stadler).

He has said before in his blog that he’s not planning on going back to race Kona until he’s 40+, which I think is a few more years away.

maybe he’ll race AG in the 40-44 then STers can bitch about him racing AG
.

…he must know that winning Kona in Ironman is everything…
Maybe for him winning Kona is not everything. Plus, as has been said, he has almost no shot of winning Kona.

He’s written that a bunch, but he has a lot better chance of winning Kona at 38. No offense against the geriatric crowd, but most winning today aren’t that old!

ok one more try…

he’s a great athlete

he’s a very nice man (at least when I have interacted via email)

he should certainly be considered one of the CONTENDERS for Canada this year assuming he toes the line healthy

winning Kona in Ironman is not everything…especially to him I believe.

he has yet to win an Ironman and you have him winning two in two months including the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

There are a few other guys who may show up at these races and present him with a small challenge.

He does not walk on water nor does he claim to (that I have seen)

Look for him to compete in Kona next as an AG amatuer if his past writings are any indication.

i dont think he stands a chance against Normann,Faris or Meca…

I agree that Gordo is an admirable guy. He is a very eloquant writer (I read his blog weekly) and I enjoy his perspective on not only triathlon, but life as well. He has some very good things to say about finance, for example. Clearly a very intelligent and thoughtful person.

He also has achieved a tremendous amount of success in triathlon by having a very methodical long-term approach to improvement. He’s also done a great job of tapping into some great minds in our sport (Friel, Molina, etc.) For someone with no real athletic accomplishment before age 25 (compared to most other elite IM’ers with national or world class single sport backgrounds), its pretty damn impressive.

That said, Gordo has said himself that there is a huge difference between 8:30 fitness and 8:15 IM fitness. He’s gone 8:3X in the past, I believe…most of contenders in Hawaii have gone faster than 8:15, and in some cases, MUCH faster.

Winning IM Canada is light-years away from winning Hawaii. The group that has a realistic chance of winning IMH is maybe 10 guys. All guys with incredible work ethics (like Gordo, they just don’t write about it as much) as well as a fantastic genetics.

he is an age grouper…he just like the rest of us except he WAY faster.

tfun~

I agree that Gordo is at heart an age grouper racing as a pro :-).

Paulo, come on, all these guys have already given IMC to Gordo but they are forgetting that Jonnyo on the Orbea will be riding 4:10 and starting the marathon with a 30 minute lead…that bike alone has to be worth over 30 minutes!

maybe he’ll race AG in the 40-44 then STers can bitch about him racing AG I think that he was he is planning on doing.

Gordo is a great athlete, but he could not win IM Hawaii no matter how much he would want to.
So he may actually want to win it, but there is no way he will.

I would want to win IM Hawaii too, but there is no way in hell I will.

The odds are low of running into a box jelly out there… but, for that dude, the stakes sound a bit high:

8:29:?? when he finished 2nd…

you’re correct. I was thinking of IM Brazil, he went 8:36 there last year. Still he’s a long way from being an IM Hawaii contender.

Uh… uh… ok… uh…
